What Meliá is and where it is based

Meliá Hotels International, S.A., tax identifier A78304516, is the Spanish listed parent of a hotel and tourism services group. Its registered office is at Calle Gremio Toneleros, 24, Palma, Mallorca. This profile covers the consolidated group, rather than just the parent company’s separate accounts.

The business combines hotel operations, management for external owners, franchising and vacation clubs. A brand on a building does not mean that Meliá owns the property or employs everyone working there.

Origins, expansion and the current name

The business traces its origins to 1956, when Gabriel Escarrer Juliá began operating a hotel in Palma. The current parent company was incorporated in Madrid on 24 June 1986 as Investman, S.A.; these dates describe different milestones.

The 1987 acquisition of Hoteles Meliá brought in the brand that would eventually identify the group. Sol Meliá listed on the stock market in 1996. It moved its registered office to Palma in 1998, and the shareholders’ meeting on 1 June 2011 approved the name Meliá Hotels International.

Ownership and leadership

At the end of 2025, Hoteles Mallorquines Consolidados held 24.365% of voting rights; Hoteles Mallorquines Asociados, 13.763%; Hoteles Mallorquines Agrupados, 11.290%; and Tulipa Inversiones 2018, 5.388%. The report explains these companies’ connections with the Escarrer family and succession-related changes. Global Alpha reported indirect voting rights of 9.935% as manager of funds and accounts, rather than as an owner on its own account.

The same report states that no individual or legal entity exercises or can exercise control within the legal definition it cites. The family origins are therefore not presented here as legal control by a single shareholder. Gabriel Escarrer Jaume combines the roles of chairman and chief executive, confirmed in the results published in November 2026.

How it earns revenue

At owned or leased hotels, the group operates accommodation, food and beverage and other services. Under management contracts, it charges fees linked to hotel revenue and operating profit, alongside certain reservation, central management and application services. Franchises extend the network through agreements with external operators.

Vacation clubs market rights to use or access hotel stays. The accounts describe long-term arrangements and flexible packages; revenue is recognised as the rights are used. An initial membership payment does not automatically become revenue in full in the year received.

Specific brands and services

The 2025 portfolio distinguishes nine brands: Gran Meliá, The Meliá Collection, ME by Meliá and Paradisus in luxury; Meliá Hotels & Resorts, ZEL and INNSiDE in premium; and Sol by Meliá and Affiliated by Meliá in the segment the group calls essential. These commercial brands are not nine independent corporate groups.

MeliáRewards is the loyalty programme; melia.com and the app are direct channels, while MeliáPro serves professional distribution. Circle by Meliá forms part of the vacation offering. Their existence describes commercial services, rather than guaranteeing identical availability or features at every hotel.

Hotels and rooms at the end of 2025

At 31 December 2025, the operating portfolio comprised 383 hotels and 94,912 rooms in 39 countries: 39 owned hotels, 92 leased, 172 managed and 80 franchised. The total includes properties that are not consolidated as group-owned real estate.

In 2025, it opened 28 hotels and signed 51 additions. Signing a contract does not mean a hotel is already open: the year-end development pipeline contained 79 hotels. These historical figures included Cuba and do not describe the network following its 2026 exit.

Examples of properties and partnerships

Additions in 2025 included ME Lisbon, with 213 rooms, and Five Flowers Hotel & Spa in Formentera, with 79. The alliance with MiM, owned by Leo Messi, brought six hotels into The Meliá Collection under management agreements; it is not presented as Meliá purchasing those buildings.

Its official page identifies the hotel at Avenida César Augusto, 13, and describes a rooftop swimming pool, gym and meeting rooms. It illustrates the commercial network; it is neither the group headquarters nor evidence of property ownership.

Revenue and profit for the 2025 financial year

The consolidated accounts report operating revenue of €2,077.581 million in 2025. This is the measure used for editorial selection. Adding €18.971 million of capital gains and revaluations gives the accounting total of €2,096.552 million, which is not used as turnover.

Consolidated net profit was €200.246 million: €170.069 million attributable to the parent and €30.177 million to non-controlling interests. Group profit and the amount attributable to its shareholders are not interchangeable.

What the revenue figure includes

The breakdown includes €1,255.528 million from rooms, €459.315 million from food and beverage, €72.265 million from hotel management and €93.461 million from vacation clubs. Other items cover services, real-estate activity and other revenue; the last category includes €68.3 million in sales and loyalty commissions.

The accounts apply their recognition policies for services and vacation rights. Consolidated revenue is not the total sales of every Meliá-branded hotel: at properties managed for third parties, it may recognise fees while the owner or operator recognises accommodation revenue. The separate capital gains include approximately €11 million of investment-property valuation gains and €7.9 million from land sales in Brazil.

Direct employees and seasonality

The sustainability report discloses 31,312 people employed during the reporting period and 19,058 full-time equivalents in 2025. These are different measures: headcount is not a snapshot of the workforce on 31 December, while the full-time equivalent measure incorporates employment duration and different working hours.

People hired by operators of managed or franchised hotels are classified in the value chain. The report also identifies 400.3 full-time equivalents of non-employees within its own workforce. These populations should not be added together as though they were a single homogeneous employee base.

How health and safety is organised

The health and safety function sits within Human Resources, with global responsibilities. The report describes direct coordination in Spain, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, with external specialists supporting other countries. Risk assessment uses the FINE method, combining consequences, exposure and probability.

For 2025, it reports 118 validations and 5,718 high or very high risks identified in assessments. Identifying a risk does not itself demonstrate that it has been remedied. The report states that its health and safety system covers 100% of employees and that 87.3% are represented on committees, including 100% in Spain.

What can be stated about certification

The report describes its system as certified to ISO 45001:2018 and applicable in the countries where it operates. This wording does not itself provide an individual certificate for every hotel worldwide.

Full Audit, which participated in the audit, documents in 2026 the extension of certification to all group companies in Spain, covering more than one hundred assets, following a process begun in 2021. It also refers to the WHO healthy workplace model. This Spanish scope is not extrapolated to the entire international network, nor presented as certification issued by WHO.

Prevention in hotel operations

The 2025 WORKPLACE project sets standards for hotel back-of-house workspaces: facilities, resources, catering and the working environment. The report describes internal audits and improvement plans supported by the Meliá Listens survey, alongside ergonomic solutions, standardisation of protective equipment and preventive follow-up.

Psychosocial initiatives address working relationships, organisational culture and stress. Corporate wellbeing, diversity and sustainability weeks recorded participation by 50 hotels. These are documented activities; they do not establish a causal reduction in injuries or disorders, or coverage of every property.

2025 report: health and safety management

Injuries, ill health and indicator limitations

The 2025 employee table records 969 recordable occupational accidents, compared with 862 in 2024, and 20,041 days lost to accidents. It adds nine recordable cases of work-related ill health and 838 days lost to this cause: 20,879 days across both categories.

The report does not disclose non-employee outcomes in that table, using the transitional provision. Its published rate of 25.5 is not used here as an LTIFR: the table calls it a recordable accident rate and does not specify its calculation base there. Fatality cells contain dashes; these are not converted into a universal statement of zero fatalities throughout the hotel value chain.

Emissions and progress against the climate target

The 2025 inventory reports 27,090.9 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in Scope 1, 99,080.7 in market-based Scope 2 and 715,480.8 in Scope 3. Location-based Scope 2 is 147,337.5 tonnes: an alternative measure that must not be added to the market-based amount.

The climate target uses a different allocation: emissions from managed hotels fall within Scopes 1 and 2, whereas the financial-boundary inventory classifies them as Scope 3. Within the target boundary, the reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 from 2018 was 9.5%, below the 29.4% target for 2025. A different emissions classification does not mean that the target was achieved.

A documented competition-law finding

On 21 February 2020, the European Commission fined Meliá €6.678 million for clauses in tour-operator contracts restricting sales according to consumers’ country of residence in the European Economic Area. The infringement examined concerned 2014 and 2015.

The Commission stated that Meliá acknowledged the facts and infringement and cooperated beyond its legal obligation, receiving a 30% fine reduction. This is an identified historical decision; it is not presented as proceedings pending in 2026 or evidence that those clauses remain in force.

The exit from Cuba in 2026

On 21 July 2026, Meliá announced that its Portuguese subsidiary Ilha Bela Gestao e Turismo would end all hotel management and marketing services in Cuba on 24 July. The decision included authorised brands, inbound tourism services and the local supply chain. The company attributed it to persistent operational, legal, economic and financial difficulties.

The nine-month results confirm cessation and classify the business as discontinued operations, with a €79.821 million loss for the period. This classification changes comparisons: the 2025 network included 34 Cuban hotels and 14,053 rooms that no longer appear in the September 2026 operating portfolio.

Position reported in November 2026

The 3 November publication puts the end-September portfolio at 362 hotels and 82,559 rooms: 39 owned, 92 leased, 148 managed and 83 franchised. The 77 hotels awaiting addition are reported separately; they are not completed openings.

For the first nine months of 2026, consolidated profit was €93.485 million, combining €173.306 million from continuing operations with a €79.821 million loss from discontinued operations. This partial period and changed boundary do not replace the complete 2025 financial year used in the profile.

Operational innovation: measuring and reviewing technology

CO2PERATE, launched in 2019, combines energy-consumption measurement with artificial intelligence applied to air-conditioning equipment. The report separates establishing a reliable consumption baseline from the optimisation phase. At owned and leased hotels, reviewing the benefit-to-investment ratio led to removal of the AI solution from 20 business units during 2025 because of its limited impact. Hotels with consumption monitoring increased from 39 to 56, while those with optimisation systems declined from 44 to 24.

Within the separate boundary of managed and franchised hotels, the company reports six further removals of the air-conditioning solution following a cost-benefit analysis. These hotels are not attributed to the owned and leased portfolio.

The report also describes a pilot at two Spanish hotels to measure organic-waste components in real time and support the diagnosis of corrective measures with AI. It documents a trial and its purpose but does not quantify achieved savings that could be extrapolated to the whole chain.
