What is PRISA

PRISA is a Spanish education and media group headed by Promotora de Informaciones, S.A., tax number A28297059, with its registered office at Gran Vía 32, Madrid. This profile covers the consolidated group, organised around Santillana and PRISA Media. News brands, operating companies and the listed parent serve different roles: neither EL PAÍS nor Cadena SER alone represents the whole PRISA group. PRISA: legal notice; PRISA: 2025 consolidated financial statements and audit report, PDF p. 18; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 9.

From newspaper publishing to education and media

The company was incorporated in Madrid on 18 January 1972.

At the 1991 shareholders’ meeting, Jesús Polanco credited José Ortega Spottorno with the initiative to establish PRISA in 1972. At the 2018 meeting, Manuel Polanco described Jesús de Polanco as a founder and driving force behind the group. EL PAÍS: Jesús Polanco’s address to PRISA shareholders, 1991; PRISA: Manuel Polanco’s address at the 2018 shareholders’ meeting, PDF p. 2.

EL PAÍS published its first issue in 1976; PRISA became the majority shareholder of Sociedad Española de Radiodifusión in 1985, acquired Cinco Días in 1989 and AS in 1996, and listed in 2000. Its Latin American expansion included publishing and radio businesses. In 2020 it concentrated Santillana’s business in Latin America. Its present activities combine content, digital distribution and educational services. PRISA: 2025 consolidated financial statements and audit report, PDF p. 18; PRISA: group and history.

Listed capital and shareholdings

PRISA is listed on Spain’s four stock exchanges. Its accounts report Joseph Oughourlian’s indirect voting rights, associated with Amber Capital’s investment management, at 29.75% at year-end 2025, alongside significant holdings by Vivendi, Rucandio, Global Alconaba and other investors. This is a dated snapshot, not evidence that Amber or the Polanco family wholly owns the group. CNMV notifications carry different dates; their percentages cannot simply be added without checking control chains and denominators. PRISA: 2025 consolidated financial statements and audit report, PDF p. 70; CNMV: notifications of holdings in PRISA.

Current leadership and governance

The corporate governance website checked on 8 November 2026 identifies Joseph Oughourlian as chair, Pilar Gil as CEO of PRISA Media and Alberto Polanco as CEO of Santillana. Polanco took over from Francisco Cuadrado on 1 January 2026. Board committees cover audit, risk and compliance; appointments, remuneration and corporate governance; and sustainability. These current appointments are distinct from the organisation chart in the 2025 report. PRISA: board and senior management; PRISA: Santillana succession announcement, 2025.

Santillana: educational materials and services

Santillana operates in school education across Latin America. It combines books and materials with subscription learning systems, platforms, assessment, teacher training and support for schools. Its portfolio includes Santillana, Moderna, Norma, Richmond, Compartir and UNOi. The 2025 report records approximately 3.6 million subscriptions, a different measure from the total number of students using its content. Private-school contracts coexist with public programmes, including Brazilian educational-material procurement. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 12; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 13.

PRISA Media: press, radio and digital formats

PRISA Media brings together press, radio, digital audio, audiovisual production and events. Its brands include EL PAÍS, AS, Cinco Días, Cadena SER, LOS40, Cadena Dial, Caracol Radio, W Radio and Podium Podcast. Revenue comes from advertising, circulation and subscriptions, alongside other activities and services. EL PAÍS ended 2025 with 451,304 total subscribers. This measure differs from monthly audiences, registered users and exclusively digital subscriptions. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 14.

International presence and reporting scope

The 2025 non-financial statement describes operations in 22 countries and the same scope as the consolidated accounts. Spain generated 39.6% of operating revenue and international markets 60.4%; Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile accounted for 87.7%. Activities span newsrooms, radio stations, offices, educational services and production and distribution suppliers. PRISA Media’s scope changed in 2026: its October announcement states that Grupo Radiópolis has been fully consolidated since April, which matters when comparing periods. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 9; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 12; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 111; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 112; PRISA: January–September 2026 revenue, 29 October, PDF p. 3.

Financial scale: full year 2025

The audited consolidated accounts record net turnover of €883.172 million in 2025. Adding €21.163 million of other income gives operating revenue of €904.335 million: these are separate accounting measures. The consolidated result was a loss of €26.652 million. KPMG issued an unmodified audit opinion on 24 March 2026. This profile uses net turnover to describe annual scale, without adding it again to operating revenue or to the economic value generated in the non-financial statement. Workforce and employment

At 31 December 2025 PRISA reported 7,242 active employees: 3,491 at Santillana, 3,709 at PRISA Media and 42 in corporate functions. Of these, 2,661 worked in Spain. Women represented approximately 49%, and permanent contracts 96.27%. These figures concern the group’s employees, not its entire network of external contributors. Reported training totalled 133,481 hours during the year across all subjects, rather than occupational risk prevention alone. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 81; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 86; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 88; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 89; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 97.

Digitalisation and artificial intelligence

The group approved an artificial intelligence use policy in 2024 and established oversight committees for each business unit in 2025. PRISA Media documents training for more than 800 professionals, audio transcription and tagging tools, and editorial assistance. Santillana describes tools for lesson planning, assessment and personalised learning. These initiatives change tasks and skills; documented projects do not in themselves establish reduced mental workload or replace an assessment of working conditions. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 54; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 55; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 56.

Occupational safety and health organisation

The 2025 non-financial statement places the Prevention Service within Human Resources. Its responsibilities include identifying and assessing risks, including psychosocial factors, preventive planning, training, information and emergency measures. The group states that its management system covers all activities and employees and describes health and safety committees in Spain and Latin America. In Spain it reports technical reviews of workplaces and jobs, alongside a medical service sharing information through PRISANET. This organisational statement does not establish group-wide ISO 45001 certification. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 105.

Psychosocial risks and disconnection

Psychosocial assessments were conducted across several geographies in 2025. According to the report, the Prevention Service and People teams analysed organisational, interpersonal and workload factors to identify exposed groups and guide measures. A comprehensive action plan was scheduled for 2026; this profile does not present it as completed. PRISA Media and corporate functions have had a disconnection policy since 2021, while Santillana documents local policies in Spain, Colombia and Peru. Psychological support and climate surveys can complement prevention, but do not themselves establish that identified organisational risks have been corrected. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 91; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 92.

Ergonomics, first aid and correspondents

Reported Spanish measures in 2025 include first-aid courses and materials, individual ergonomic studies and adjustments using footrests, monitor risers and wrist supports. The medical service at Miguel Yuste in Madrid expanded access to prescribed clinical tests, alongside health campaigns, vaccination and physiotherapy. A review of emergency equipment for war correspondents began, particularly for advanced wound care, with the aim of equipping all correspondents in 2026. The review and its objective are documented; that announcement does not establish universal delivery or effectiveness. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 105; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 106.

Accidents and interpretation of indicators

PRISA reported 51 accidents involving medical leave in 2025, compared with 44 in 2024: 26 at Santillana and 25 at PRISA Media. The frequency rate was 3.68, calculated as lost-time accidents per million hours worked; the severity rate of 0.06 represents days lost per thousand hours. These disclosures appear in the own-employee chapter. The table does not specify how commuting accidents are treated or provide the hours denominator needed to recalculate the rates. Its statement of no occupational disease cases is limited to Spain in 2025, rather than the whole group or every work-related health condition. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 81; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 107.

The non-financial statement reports 4,188 people covered by company collective agreements in 2025, or 57.83% of the entire workforce. The 79% figure also shown in the report uses a subset of countries as its denominator and is not group-wide coverage. On 19 October 2026, CCOO’s PRISA Radio section announced a newly signed agreement, then awaiting registration and publication. Its summary highlights worker-representative participation in AI implementation and measures addressing harassment and adverse weather. This is union reporting about that bargaining scope, not confirmation of implementation throughout the group. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 94; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 95; CCOO at PRISA Radio: collective agreement update, 19 October 2026.

Reporting channels and policy limitations

PRISA provides channels for reporting irregularities and protocols addressing harassment. Its non-financial statement records 53 reports received in 2025: 11 were considered substantiated and one remained under investigation. Seven substantiated reports concerned employment matters, including one harassment case which, according to the company, resulted in disciplinary action and stronger controls. These are internally determined outcomes reported by the group, not court judgments. They illustrate why a published policy alone does not demonstrate the absence of problems or preventive effectiveness. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 39; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 42; PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 44.

Resources and environmental footprint

Paper, energy, travel and distribution contribute to the group’s footprint. PRISA reports 2025 measures involving heating and cooling, lighting, mobility and certified paper purchasing. It states that 86.8% of electricity came from renewable sources, supported by contracts and certificates. Its emissions methodology changed to ISO 14064-1 alongside improvements to data and calculation factors; the report itself warns of limited comparability with 2024. The reduction in calculated emissions therefore cannot be attributed entirely to physical operational improvements. Transformation and interpreting the evidence

The 2026–2029 strategy seeks growth in subscriptions and digital services while strengthening the financial position. The 2025 refinancing extended Senior and Super Senior bank-debt maturities to 2029. In October 2026 the group reported €719 million of revenue for January–September; growth included Brazilian educational-order deliveries shifted from 2025 and scope changes, and does not replace the full year used in this profile. Grant Thornton provided limited assurance, dated 24 March 2026, over the information identified in the non-financial statement’s index. Its conclusion was unmodified, with an emphasis on the comparability of EU taxonomy disclosures. Neither that assurance nor corporate policies establish that every 2026 prevention objective has been achieved. The reviewed evidence describes a health and safety system, prevention services and committees. It does not establish group-wide ISO 45001 certification; organisational coverage and external certification are different concepts. PRISA: 2025 Non-Financial Information Statement, PDF p. 105. [1]

  • Right to disconnect. Provides context for PRISA’s disconnection policies and their relationship with workload, working time and rest.
  • Psychosocial risk assessment. Connects the 2025 assessments with organisational measures and follow-up, distinguishing them from psychological support.
  • Cognitive ergonomics. Offers criteria for examining mental workload, interfaces and interruptions in editorial work and AI tools without attributing undocumented interventions to the group.
