Product and operation
Acetaldehyde has CAS number 75-07-0. INRS describes mainly organic-synthesis use and activities involving plastics, dyes and perfumes. Establish whether it is handled as feedstock, a mixture or an intermediate stream. A chemical-family label is insufficient to define exposure or to justify reusing a measurement method for another aldehyde without checking that it is suitable for the actual assessment.
Rapid release matters
High volatility makes opening, transfer and loss of containment particularly important. Do not assess only closed operation of the reactor or vessel. Include sampling, cleaning and maintenance, identifying the people and durations involved. Controls should act before release; smell or irritation is not an adequate monitoring system for deciding when intervention is needed or whether existing control remains effective.
Current hazards beyond irritation
The INRS sheet includes carcinogenicity and suspected mutagenic effects alongside eye and respiratory irritation. Assessment cannot focus solely on avoiding immediate discomfort. Classification identifies hazard rather than predicting an individual’s risk from a particular exposure. Use it to guide substitution, containment and exposure reduction together with current requirements and professional evaluation of the work, including tasks that occur only occasionally.
Reactivity and storage
Acetaldehyde is extremely flammable and can polymerise or oxidise, with dangerous reactions depending on conditions. Composition, stabilisation and material compatibility should be documented by the supplier and process specialists. Do not improvise product recovery, mixing or prolonged storage. Occupational hygiene and chemical-process safety need coordination because a change introduced for one purpose may alter the other risk at the same time.
Selective measurement
Agree occupational hygiene sampling that identifies acetaldehyde and represents the most relevant operations. Tell the laboratory about other aldehydes and substances so selectivity and interference can be assessed. Record temperature, duration, position and active controls. A general volatile-organic-compound result does not by itself establish this substance’s concentration or justify attributing all observed emissions to acetaldehyde in a mixed process.
Follow decisions through
If an open operation is replaced with contained sampling, subsequently check connections, purging and waste handling. Improvement should be evident under real conditions, not only in a design drawing. Keep the rationale, results and outstanding actions. References about industrial exposure should not be combined without explanation with assessments of acetaldehyde associated with alcohol consumption, which involve a different scenario and route of exposure.
