The door contains stored energy
The closure must prevent pressurisation unless properly secured and prevent dangerous opening while internal pressure remains. Interlocking devices contribute to this protection. Defeating them to complete a cycle or retrieve a load turns a fault into a serious exposure.
Pressure acts across the entire door surface. An apparently small residual pressure can therefore exert considerable force. Confirm safe conditions using the designed system and procedure, without forcing the closure or treating a single gauge reading as permission to open the vessel.
Load for the intended process
Containers, packaging and materials must be compatible with the process. Overloading or poor arrangement can prevent steam circulation and create uneven treatment. In laboratories, some chemicals and damaged containers introduce additional hazards and must not be accepted without a suitable assessment.
Sterilisation effectiveness and operational safety are different checks. Colour-changing tape indicates exposure to particular conditions, but does not by itself prove that the whole load received the required treatment. The relevant validation and performance-monitoring arrangements must also be followed.
Unloading needs cooling and protection
Liquids and materials can retain heat after the cycle. Premature handling can cause splashing, container failure or burns. The procedure must establish cooling and handling conditions for each load type, rather than assuming one waiting time is suitable for every autoclave.
Select protection for hands, eyes, face and body according to the hazard. Trolleys, trays and working height should allow movement without spills or unnecessary strain. Keep people who are not involved in the operation clear of the door and unloading area.
Separate inspection from maintenance
Records should distinguish pressure-equipment examination, maintenance and performance verification. Sensor, closure, seal or alarm faults need attention before continued use. A paperwork review does not substitute for checking that protective devices actually perform their intended functions.
Where a person can enter the chamber, a specific assessment must prevent closure and pressurisation with someone inside. Manufacturer instructions and competent personnel determine arrangements for operation, faults and maintenance, including connections to other equipment that could introduce pressure or hot fluid unexpectedly.
