Colorimetric detector tubes for gases and vapours

Colorimetric detector tubes indicate particular contaminants through a chemical colour change. They provide rapid field information when the tube, pump, sample volume and reading conditions match the specified method. Their apparent simplicity does not remove the need for careful interpretation.

How the reading is produced

In aspirated tubes, a specified air volume passes through a reactive material. The length or intensity of the colour change is interpreted using the corresponding scale and instructions. The reaction is designed for particular substances but can be affected by interferences. A result depends on sampling under the specified conditions; simply observing a coloured stain does not establish that a valid concentration measurement has been obtained.

Choose a complete compatible system

Tube and pump must be compatible according to the manufacturer. Check the target substance, measurement range, expiry, storage and permitted environmental conditions. Pump strokes, volume and correction rules must not be transferred automatically from another tube type. Preparation and reading require training and compliance with instructions, including safe management of the glass and reagent after use. A visually similar product may have a different operating specification.

A spot reading is not a full-shift exposure

Many tubes are used for short sampling periods to investigate an operation or area. Longer-duration systems also exist with their own requirements. Establish what period a result represents before comparing it with an exposure criterion. Whether a sample is personal or area-based also changes the question it can answer. A reading near an emission source is not equivalent to the amount inhaled by an individual throughout work.

Interferences and ambiguous colour changes

Other gases may produce similar colours or interfere with the reaction. Temperature, humidity and sampling faults can introduce errors. A diffuse boundary or unexpected colour must be interpreted according to instructions rather than forced into a numerical answer. A result below the range does not demonstrate zero concentration. Where a decision needs greater selectivity or lower uncertainty, use an appropriate complementary method instead of overstating the tube’s capabilities.

Record enough to interpret the measurement

Record tube reference and batch, pump, preliminary checks, sample volume, time, location, task, conditions and reading, including authorised corrections. Retain observations about possible interference or reading difficulty. This makes it possible to distinguish an indication useful for investigation from a determination suitable for a specific assessment purpose. A simple device still requires a justified sampling strategy and enough documentation for another professional to understand what was actually measured.

For an unexpected reading, first check the tube, expiry date, pump and conditions while preserving the original result. Repeating until a convenient colour appears is not verification. If the decision requires distinguishing interfering substances, choose a sufficiently selective method and explain why the tube is or is not suitable for that specific question.
