What an edge protection system protects
It is a collective barrier at the edge of a surface, platform or opening that prevents people from falling. Its function depends on the assembly: posts, handrails, intermediate elements, lower protection and fixings. Warning tape marks an area but does not provide the strength of edge protection.
Related concept: Collective protection.
Temporary and permanent systems are not interchangeable
Temporary protection accompanies construction phases and other changing situations. Permanent protection forms part of the building or fixed access. Guardrails may also be integrated into temporary equipment. Identifying the case avoids selecting a system solely by its height or the appearance of its tubes.
What to check before installation
Slope, possible fall trajectory, expected loads, support strength and compatibility of each component matter. A post designed for fixing to a slab cannot be transferred to sheet metal without justifying the anchorage. Installation must follow the assessed configuration and available instructions.
Risk changes during work
Storing materials near an edge, adding a raised platform or removing a section to receive a load changes the protection. Safety during that operation and restoration of the barrier must be resolved. Inspections look for loose fixings, deformation, gaps and unauthorised changes.
It should be clear who authorises partial removal and who checks reinstatement. If several companies work at the same edge, they must know the current configuration and phase changes affecting that shared protection.
Hypothetical example
A roof has a parapet protecting people walking on it. A small podium is installed near the perimeter for machine maintenance. Raising the standing surface reduces the parapet’s effective height. Assessment must consider the new workstation; an existing parapet does not demonstrate protection for that intervention.
Scope and documentation
No single height or technical standard is valid for every location. The design must identify use, system, support, installation and checks. INSST technical notes distinguish system families and scopes; they guide selection without turning a construction solution into universal protection for every activity.
