Who is Ian Somerhalder?
Ian Somerhalder is an American actor, director and producer born in Louisiana on 8 December 1978. His career combines television fiction, documentary production and environmental projects. In an interview about his foundation, he described empathy, gratitude and respect as principles shaping his understanding of social change. [5]
Early work and Lost
He grew up in Covington and worked as a model before developing his acting career. Young Americans gave him an early leading television role, followed by appearances in Smallville and Tell Me You Love Me. These jobs preceded the two characters most closely associated with his screen career: Boone Carlyle and Damon Salvatore. [6]
In film, he played Paul Denton in Roger Avary’s The Rules of Attraction (2002), alongside James Van Der Beek and Shannyn Sossamon. Set at a New England college, the ensemble satire placed his work in an adult dramatic setting, distinct from the supernatural television roles that later dominated his career. [7]
His portrayal of Boone Carlyle in Lost was part of the ensemble that won the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance in a drama series in 2006. This was a collective cast award: the official record explicitly lists Somerhalder and his character among its recipients. [8]
Damon Salvatore and television directing
The Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on 10 September 2009. Somerhalder played Damon Salvatore, brother of Paul Wesley’s Stefan, in the story of the two vampires and Elena Gilbert. Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec developed the series, with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios among its production companies. [9]
The series ended on 10 March 2017 after eight seasons. Its finale, I Was Feeling Epic, brought Damon and Stefan together for a final battle over Mystic Falls. Julie Plec directed and co-wrote the episode with Williamson; the farewell also included a retrospective special featuring cast and crew. [10]
He also moved into directing during this period. His debut, The Downward Spiral, aired on 12 March 2015 and was written by Brian Young and Caroline Dries. Discussing the experience publicly, he emphasized learning within an established team and the collaboration between cast and crew in making the episode. [11]
V Wars and producing
His next major television project was V Wars, adapted from Jonathan Maberry’s fictional universe. IDW Entertainment and High Park Entertainment produced the series, with William Laurin and Glenn Davis serving as showrunners. Somerhalder took the role of Dr Luther Swann, who investigates his best friend’s transformation. [12]
Netflix released a ten-episode season in 2019, also starring Adrian Holmes and Jacky Lai. The fictional outbreak triggers a confrontation between humans and vampires. Swann therefore provides a different perspective from Damon: he observes the transformation and tries to understand it through the role of a scientist. [13]
Alongside acting, he executive-produced the show and directed one episode. In a 2019 interview, he described the difficulty of combining these responsibilities: The Vampire Diaries could reduce his acting scenes before a directing assignment to allow preparation, whereas V Wars offered less flexibility. His account provides a specific example of production scheduling. [14]
Foundation and environmental advocacy
He established the Ian Somerhalder Foundation in 2010. UNEP records its focus on conservation, environmental education, clean energy and animal protection, together with his involvement in cleaning wildlife affected by Deepwater Horizon. It also documents his appearance in Years of Living Dangerously, in an episode addressing the effects of coal mining. [15]
On 5 June 2014, he was appointed a UNEP Goodwill Ambassador in Bridgetown, Barbados. The ceremony coincided with World Environment Day, which that year focused on small island states and their challenges. The appointment connected his public communication work with an international campaign on the environment and island vulnerability. [1]
That month, he testified before a US House of Representatives subcommittee on the ivory trade. He advocated trade restrictions and funding for species conservation, anti-poaching efforts and habitat protection. He appeared as an actor and foundation founder, drawing on conservation organizations’ work and his experience growing up in Louisiana. [16]
Documentaries on soil and nature
For Conservation International’s Nature Is Speaking, he voiced the coral reef. The campaign uses performance to give elements of nature a voice. [17]
He participated on screen and as an executive producer in Kiss the Ground (2020). Directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell and narrated by Woody Harrelson, the documentary presents experiences and arguments about soil regeneration. The project extended his work from acting into environmental storytelling focused on farming and land use. [3]
He continued this work as a narrator and executive producer of Common Ground, which premiered at Tribeca on 8 June 2023. Josh and Rebecca Tickell directed this second film about farmers and regenerative practices. [18]
In 2026, he also appears in the production credits of Groundswell, available on Prime Video. Directed by Josh Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell, the film continues their documentary exploration of regenerative agriculture. These successive projects establish an environmental production strand in his career, with distinct directing teams and participants attached to each work. [19]
Brother’s Bond and business ventures
With Paul Wesley, he co-founded Brother’s Bond Bourbon, launched in May 2021. According to the company’s history, both helped select and blend whiskeys and develop the name, labeling and glass packaging. The venture carried a relationship developed during The Vampire Diaries into the spirits industry. [20]
The business connected part of its sourcing strategy with grain grown using regenerative agriculture. In May 2025, it announced a small-batch bourbon selected for 1 Hotels. The partnership places his environmental interests within a specific commercial activity, through ingredients and supplier relationships described by the companies themselves. [21]
In September 2025, Brother’s Bond introduced another regenerative-grain batch, aged for four years, alongside a range-wide packaging redesign. The company credited Wesley with leading the packaging work. This division of responsibilities distinguishes the shared venture from the individual contributions of its founders and management team.
