Who is Jack Johnson
Jack Johnson is an American singer-songwriter and filmmaker raised in Hawaii. [1] He also cofounded organisations supporting environmental, arts and music education. [20, 22]
Hawaii, guitar and film studies
He grew up on Oʻahu’s North Shore and began guitar at fourteen, citing influences including Nick Drake, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. Before releasing his first album he made surf films. [1]
He graduated in film studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997. A contemporary campus report includes faculty recollections of his work. This training provides context for the continuing connections between filming, editing and music throughout his career. [4]
Surfing and early filmmaking
Thicker Than Water and The September Sessions belong to his early filmmaking period. The latter’s production account describes Kelly Slater inviting him on a surf trip that also contributed to F-Stop Blues for his first album, connecting film and songwriting through a shared experience. [5]
In March 2026 his team announced digital availability of both films, restored in 4K from original 16mm material. Their preservation makes his early filmmaking accessible and establishes surfing as a substantive creative activity rather than simply a musical image. [6]
Brushfire Fairytales, On & On and In Between Dreams
Brushfire Fairytales appeared in 2001. [12] Its credits name producer J. P. Plunier, drummer Adam Topol, bassist Merlo Podlewski and Ben Harper on slide guitar for Flake, establishing a collaborative foundation alongside Johnson’s singing and songwriting. [7]
On & On, released in 2003, was produced by Mario Caldato Jr. at Hawaii’s Mango Tree studio; Topol and Podlewski share writing credit on Wasting Time. [8] In Between Dreams followed in 2005, with Zach Gill contributing piano and accordion to several tracks. [9]
Curious George and different audiences
In February 2006 he released Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George with several collaborators. Songs written or selected for the animated film include Upside Down, with contributions from Ben Harper, G. Love and Matt Costa. This family-oriented project broadened his formats and audiences. [10]
Recording continuity and changing producers
Sleep Through the Static reunited him with J. P. Plunier. Its credits identify Mango Tree and Solar Powered Plastic Plant and report solar energy and recycled paper use. These are production disclosures, distinct from an independent environmental audit. [11]
Sleep Through the Static (2008), To the Sea (2010) and From Here to Now to You (2013) all reached number one on the Billboard 200, as Curious George had done. [12] The 2013 record reunited him with Caldato and Ben Harper. [13]
He shared production with Robbie Lackritz on 2017’s All the Light Above It Too. [14] His eighth studio album, Meet the Moonlight, arrived in 2022 with producer Blake Mills and sessions in Los Angeles and Hawaii, continuing a recognisable career through changing collaborations. [15]
In Between Dub, released in June 2023, collects remixes by Lee “Scratch” Perry, Scientist, Dennis Bovell and others. It reinterprets existing recordings through dub techniques rather than presenting an entirely new set of songs. [16]
SURFILMUSIC and 2026 activity
The 2026 documentary SURFILMUSIC revisited the connections between surfing, film and music in his life, reaching cinemas in June. [17] A companion double album combines original music with Hermanos Gutiérrez and early material recovered from four-track tapes. [18]
The North American tour ended with two Hollywood Bowl shows in October 2026. His team documented guests including Ben Harper, Kelly Slater and Blake Mills, connecting recent material with longstanding collaborators. [19]
Kōkua Hawaiʻi and Johnson Ohana
Kim and Jack Johnson founded Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation in 2003 to support environmental education in Hawaiian schools and communities. Its practical activities address food, waste and environmental stewardship with students, families and educators. The foundation is a joint initiative rather than Jack’s individual creation. [20]
Programmes include ʻĀINA In Schools, Plastic Free Hawaiʻi, school recycling and Kōkua Learning Farm, alongside educational grants. [21] They established Johnson Ohana Foundation in 2008 to support environmental, arts and music education. Its history also records Jack joining 1% for the Planet in 2004. [22]
All At Once and environmental touring practices
During the 2008 tour, All At Once organised Village Green spaces connecting audiences with local organisations and activities around shared transport, water and waste. Its Sydney account documents how concert participation linked to community initiatives. [23]
The 2026 campaign continues environmental partnerships and direct or matching donations through Johnson Ohana Foundation, promoting local food systems and reusable products. These measures form part of the tour’s environmental practices. [2]
Environmental representation and musical recognition
UNEP appointed him a goodwill ambassador on 5 June 2015 in Eleuthera, the Bahamas, highlighting marine pollution, sustainable food and waste reduction. His role concerned public communication and engagement, distinct from scientific research. [24]
The Recording Academy lists two 2006 Grammy nominations: male pop vocal performance for Sitting, Waiting, Wishing and pop collaboration with vocals for Gone Going with Black Eyed Peas. These were nominations, not wins. [25]
