Who is Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts was born in Georgia on 28 October 1967 and grew up in Smyrna in a family connected with theatre. Her parents had established an acting and writing workshop. After graduating from Campbell High School in 1985, she moved to New York and began pursuing a professional path in acting. [4]

From early recognition to romantic comedy

Mystic Pizza was among the early films that brought her to wider attention. Steel Magnolias consolidated that beginning and earned her first Oscar nomination. Moving from a youthful role into an ensemble of established actresses preceded her emergence as a leading performer in major productions, while leaving room for work across different genres. [5]

In Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman (1990), she played Vivian Ward opposite Richard Gere. The story turns an encounter between people from different social worlds into a romantic comedy. The character became associated with her emergence as a major star and provides a reference point for understanding the romantic roles that followed. [6]

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) offered a different kind of protagonist: Jules Potter tries to stop her best friend’s wedding after recognising her feelings for him. Alongside Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett, Roberts plays a character whose manoeuvres drive the conflict, rather than simply awaiting the resolution of a love story. [7]

In Roger Michell’s Notting Hill (1999), she played Anna Scott, a film star who becomes involved with a London bookseller played by Hugh Grant. The contrast between celebrity and ordinary life places fame inside the fiction itself. The film continued her romantic-comedy work from a perspective different from Vivian Ward’s. [8]

For Runaway Bride (1999), she reunited with Richard Gere and Garry Marshall. She played Maggie Carpenter, whose repeated departures from her own weddings attract a journalist’s attention. The film brought together members of the Pretty Woman team for another comedy about relationships and expectations surrounding marriage. [21]

Other notable film roles

Steven Soderbergh cast her in Ocean’s Eleven (2001) as Tess, Danny Ocean’s former partner. Her character provides part of the personal motivation for the three-casino Las Vegas heist. [22] She returned in Ocean’s Twelve (2004), which reunites the group when the casino owner demands his money back. [23]

In Eat Pray Love (2010), she played Liz Gilbert, who travels through Italy, India and Bali after a divorce. The adaptation combines travel experiences and personal exploration. [24] In Stephen Chbosky’s Wonder (2017), she played Isabel Pullman, mother of Auggie, a boy with facial differences who begins attending school. [25]

Erin Brockovich and a broader dramatic range

Steven Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich (2000) gave her the role of a woman working with a lawyer on a pollution case affecting a community. Roberts portrays a real person within a cinematic dramatisation. The investigation and pursuit of the case belong to Brockovich; Roberts’s contribution is the artistic performance that brings the story to the screen. [9]

The Academy recognised that performance with the Oscar for Actress in a Leading Role at the ceremony on 25 March 2001. The award honoured a film released the previous year. It became a major professional milestone alongside her comedy career, recognising a performance built around the experience and determination of one central character. [10]

Closer (2004) brought her together with Mike Nichols for an adaptation of Patrick Marber’s stage play. She shared its central ensemble with Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen. In place of romantic-comedy conventions, the story explores desire, deception and separation among four people, widening the kinds of conflict she portrayed on screen. [11]

Theatre and new collaborations

In 2006 she made her Broadway debut in Three Days of Rain at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The production record credits her as Nan and Lina, alongside Bradley Cooper and Paul Rudd. Set in 1995 and 1960, the play gives its actors characters from different generations. The production ran from April to June. [12]

Her 2014 BAFTA nomination for Supporting Actress in August: Osage County reflects her continuing work in dramatic ensembles. It recognised a supporting performance, a different category from her leading role in Erin Brockovich. The movement between a central role and participation within an ensemble is one way of tracing the variety of her career. [13]

Television and recognition

On television she played Dr Emma Brookner in The Normal Heart, a story about the response to HIV and AIDS in the 1980s. She received an Emmy nomination in 2014. The Television Academy also records a 1999 guest-actress nomination for Law & Order, demonstrating that her television work predates the streaming-platform phase of her career. [14]

Homecoming expanded her involvement in serial drama. She played Heidi Bergman, a worker at a veterans’ centre, in a story combining memory and mystery, and also served as an executive producer. Her Television Academy interview describes approaching an episodic format in which the character’s experience unfolds across a season rather than a single feature film. [15]

The Golden Globes record wins for Steel Magnolias, Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich, alongside nominations for television work including Homecoming and Gaslit. These distinctions span comedy, drama and series. Her awards history identifies particular moments of professional recognition without reducing the whole filmography to those titles that secured a trophy. [1]

Producing and recent work

Ol Parker’s Ticket to Paradise (2022) reunited her with George Clooney in a comedy about former spouses trying to prevent their daughter’s wedding. Returning to the romantic genre brought characters at another stage of life. Her filmography therefore combines continuity in familiar genres with roles shaped by different ages and family relationships. [16]

Her work also includes producing. Netflix credits Roberts, Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill as producers of Leave the World Behind through Red Om Films. Sam Esmail wrote and directed the adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel. The project illustrates a responsibility beyond performance: participation in the organisation that brings a work to the screen. [17]

In 2025, After the Hunt appeared in Venice’s out-of-competition selection. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Nora Garrett, it features Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield. Its story of a university professor confronting an accusation against a colleague continues her involvement in dramas about relationships, authority and personal conflict. [18]

The limited series Gaslit (2022) cast her as Martha Mitchell alongside Sean Penn as John Mitchell. It approaches Watergate through people caught up in the scandal and their personal relationships. Roberts portrayed a historical figure facing public and family conflict, extending her television work following Homecoming. [26]

Nature Is Speaking and health campaigns

For Conservation International’s Nature Is Speaking, she voiced Mother Nature. The campaign personifies aspects of nature to explain human dependence on ecosystems. Roberts contributes a vocal performance within an environmental communication initiative, using her artistic profession in a setting different from a fictional feature film. The organisation develops the broader conservation message. [2]

The Clean Cooking Alliance identifies her as a Global Champion from May 2011. Her participation raises awareness of problems associated with cooking smoke and of clean-cooking solutions. This is a public-health campaign with a defined subject, adding another strand to her social collaborations alongside environmental communication and her work in entertainment. [19]

Commercial work and professional trajectory

In commercial work, Lancôme presents her as the face of La Vie Est Belle. This collaboration belongs to advertising and brand representation. It exists alongside acting, producing and social campaigns but performs a different function: connecting a recognisable public figure with a product and the company’s communication identity. [20]
