Who is Kelly Slater
Kelly Slater is an American surfer born in Cocoa Beach, Florida, in 1972. He started surfing at five and developed through East Coast junior competition. His early mentors included surfer and surfboard maker Matt Kechele.[8]
He cofounded Outerknown with designer John Moore.[3] At Kelly Slater Wave Company he brought a surfer’s vision to a technical project developed with fluid-mechanics specialists.[15]
From junior surfing to eleven world titles
He turned professional in 1990, won the Body Glove Surf Bout at Trestles and signed with Quiksilver.[8] His first world title came in 1992, aged twenty. His eleventh followed in 2011, aged thirty-nine: the youngest champion had also extended the record for the oldest.[9]
From 1994 through 1998 he won five consecutive professional tour championships.[10] After reducing his competitive schedule, he returned to the full tour in 2002. Rivalry with Andy Irons shaped this period; Slater reclaimed the championship in 2005 and won again in 2006.[1]
One defining performance came in the 2005 Tahiti final against Damien Hobgood. Two ten-point rides produced twenty points, the first perfect total in a Championship Tour final. The sequence illustrates his precision in selecting and completing barrels at Teahupo’o.[11]
Pipeline, the US team and recent competition
In 2019 he represented the United States at the World Surfing Games in Miyazaki, Japan. He placed fifth among 137 competitors, returning at forty-seven almost three decades after his previous appearance.[2] The Tokyo 2020 list named him as the US alternate behind Kolohe Andino and John John Florence.[13]
Shortly before turning fifty he won the 2022 Billabong Pro Pipeline, beating Seth Moniz in the final. The victory opened his Championship Tour season and added another milestone to his long association with the Hawaiian wave.[12]
His competitive appearances continued: the World Surf League documented his first-round heat against Eli Hanneman at the Outerknown Tahiti Pro in August 2026. This belongs to a period of selected appearances, distinct from his years following the full tour schedule.[14]
Kelly Slater Wave Company and Surf Ranch
In 2006 he began exploring an artificial high-performance surfing wave with Adam Fincham. Experimental work progressed from 2008 to a full-scale prototype in December 2015.[15] WSL Holdings acquired the company in 2016, bringing the technology into the tour’s business organisation.[16]
Fincham and his team combined simulations, a moving hydrofoil and a shaped pool bottom to produce a surfable wave. Surf Ranch developed in Lemoore, California. The technology also reached Surf Abu Dhabi, opened in 2024, expanding from a prototype to commercial installations.[17]
Outerknown: from sporting experience to clothing
Outerknown began operating in 2015. Slater and John Moore combined sporting experience with clothing design, with the Blanket Shirt among its early products.[3]
Photographer Todd Glaser recalled a 2014 trip to Portugal while the project was taking shape: they visited factories and Slater tested clothing in the water. Moore worked on design and Slater on real-world use, bringing fit, movement and performance while surfing into product decisions.[18]
Materials, surfboards and the organisation of the brands
Outerknown’s 2026 retrospective describes Regenerative Organic Certified cotton and NetPlus made from recycled fishing nets.[3]
His businesses also include surfboards. Slater Designs launched in 2016 within Firewire’s orbit; Firewire itself was founded in 2006. Developing models translates a surfer’s preferences into board shapes, construction and performance through collaboration with specialist designers.[19]
In May 2024 Outerknown, Firewire and Slater Designs, including Endorfins, announced a shared ownership structure. The announcement identified Slater as majority shareholder of Firewire and Slater Designs. It connected clothing, boards and surfing accessories within a common business group.[20]
Environmental communication and the ocean
While filming The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D, he collaborated with NOAA on a Please Care campaign announcement promoting everyday ocean-friendly habits. NOAA also provided scientific advice for the film and educational materials, while Slater contributed his surfing experience and public visibility.[21]
Surfrider Oahu recognised him in the 2004 John Kelly Awards.[31] In 2015 Kering and London College of Fashion announced an invitation for him to address students and professionals about fashion and entrepreneurship, drawing on founding Outerknown and incorporating environmental considerations into a business.[28]
Books, documentaries, music and video games
In Pipe Dreams: A Surfer’s Journey, written with Jason Borte, he recounted his sporting career and experiences beyond the tour, including Baywatch. Published by HarperCollins in several editions, it is an autobiographical account of competition, fame and relationships within surfing.[23]
Kelly Slater: For the Love appeared from Chronicle Books in 2008, with Phil Jarratt and a foreword by Jack Johnson. Photographs, conversations and memories broadened this personal portrait. Jarratt describes extended interviews intended to reveal less familiar sides of the champion.[22]
Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s Momentum Generation premiered at Tribeca in 2018. It combined interviews and archive material featuring Slater, Rob Machado, Shane Dorian and other surfers connected with Oahu, examining friendship, shared lives and competition as they entered professional surfing.[24]
With Rob Machado and Peter King he formed The Surfers, which released Songs from the Pipe through Epic Records in 1998, produced by T Bone Burnett.[25] His name also reached gaming through Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision in 2002.[26]
Other business ventures
In May 2024 he helped launch Freaks of Nature as a cofounder. Connected with Squared Circles, the skincare brand introduced a moisturiser and sunscreen for people active outdoors. The venture extended his commercial activity into products for everyday sporting use.[29]
In November 2026 Legacy Motor Club listed him among previously announced members of its strategic ownership group. This business participation in the NASCAR organisation, alongside athletes, investors and other public figures, added motor racing to his interests.[30]
Recognition and career
He won Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.[9] In April 2025 Robby Naish presented him with the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in Madrid, recognising his career after decades of competition and activity beyond the tour.[27]
Working conditions at Outerknown
Slater’s OSH connection can be located in Outerknown, the company he co-founded. Fair Labor Association approved accreditation of its social compliance programme in October 2017, after assessing its operation through reviews and visits. This is an organisational contribution developed by the brand’s teams and suppliers. [5]
The report includes requirements for safe, healthy and hygienic workplaces, accident prevention and adequate conditions where suppliers provide accommodation. Worker safety therefore appears as an explicit supply requirement alongside environmental decisions about garments. [6]
How to examine a supply chain
The FLA publishes assessments of factories associated with Outerknown and corrective action plans. These provide a useful procurement question: how are problems identified and their correction followed up, beyond a brand statement? [7]
The preventive application is examining the scope of an assessment, its findings and outstanding actions. Accrediting a management programme does not mean every facility is free from risk. The value of the example lies in having requirements and review mechanisms that can be checked against actual working conditions.
