Who is Nico Rosberg
Nico Rosberg is a German former Formula 1 driver and the 2016 world champion. [9] He subsequently worked in broadcasting, investment and environmental technology initiatives. [12, 19]
Early life and racing development
Born on 27 June 1985 in Wiesbaden, he grew up mainly in Monaco. His father Keke won the 1982 world championship. Karting introduced him to competition and future rivals including Lewis Hamilton. [1]
He won the Formula BMW ADAC championship in 2002. The series belonged to a junior-development pathway combining entry-level cars with organised competition, marking an important transition from karting to single-seaters. [4]
He subsequently raced in Formula 3 for Team Rosberg, founded by his father in 1994. Its history records his development in 2003–2004. This organisation is distinct from the later electric-racing project Nico established as Rosberg X Racing. [5]
GP2 and Williams debut
In 2005 he won GP2’s inaugural title with ART, taking five victories while also testing for Williams. [1]
He raced for Williams from 2006 to 2009, finishing seventh and setting the fastest lap on his Bahrain debut. His first podium came in Australia in 2008, documenting his development before joining the team with which he would become champion. [6]
Mercedes and first victories
He joined Mercedes in 2010 as the manufacturer returned as a constructor, partnering Michael Schumacher. [7] In China in April 2012 he converted his first pole into his first victory, also the team’s first win since its 2010 return. [7]
He won in Monaco in 2013 despite safety-car periods and a stoppage. The FIA described a controlled performance that brought his second Formula 1 victory, linking the circuit where he grew up to an early career milestone. [8]
The 2016 championship
He finished runner-up to Hamilton in 2014 and 2015, then won nine Grands Prix in 2016. [9] Second place behind Hamilton at the Abu Dhabi finale secured the championship by five points: the race winner and world champion were different drivers. [10]
After winning, he acknowledged the teams involved in his career, including ART and Mercedes. His remarks place an individual championship within a collective history of engineering, preparation, sporting decisions and organisational support, rather than attributing the car’s performance to one person. [20]
Retirement and recognition
He announced his retirement on 2 December 2016, five days after winning the title and before the FIA prize-giving in Vienna. He explained it in terms of the effort devoted to achieving his sporting goal, rather than losing his team seat. [11]
He won 23 races with Mercedes and received the 2017 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award. [9]
Broadcasting and communication
Sky recruited him as an analyst for selected 2018 races, beginning in Melbourne and including Sky Italia appearances. His recent experience of Mercedes and fellow drivers informed explanations of strategy, driving and team decisions. [12]
Involvement in Formula E
In 2018 he invested in Formula E and demonstrated its GEN2 car publicly in Berlin. This did not make him a championship race driver: his involvement combined investment and promotion within an electric-motorsport series. [13]
Rosberg X Racing
In October 2020 he announced an Extreme E team, initially named Rosberg Xtreme Racing, drawing on Team Rosberg’s experience ahead of a 2021 debut. Nico acted as founder and organiser while other drivers competed. [14]
Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson won the inaugural event in 2021. [15] RXR took the 2021 and 2023 titles, the latter with Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky. [16] The team announced its closure in December 2024 in a statement reported by RACER. [17]
Greentech Festival and environmental technology
He cofounded Greentech Festival with Marco Voigt in 2019. Exhibitions, conferences and awards bring together environmental-technology projects and businesses. Participation provides exposure and connections; claims about individual solutions still require assessment of their own evidence and results. [18]
The festival archive documents editions from 2019 to 2025 and initiatives including Green Awards and GTF Connect. It records continuing environmental communication and event organisation. [2]
Rosberg Ventures and investment activity
Rosberg Ventures describes a combination of venture-fund investments, early-stage co-investments and connections between German corporations and startups. Investing through other managers differs from taking a direct company stake, and neither means founding or operating every portfolio business. [19]
