Who is Sam Altman?

Sam Altman is an entrepreneur, investor and OpenAI CEO. He represented the company at the UN Security Council in September 2026.[1]

Education and early years

He grew up in St Louis and studied computer science at Stanford for two years. He left in 2005, after his sophomore year, to develop his company. The introduction to his 2024 Stanford talk places this move in Y Combinator’s first intake. [6]

Loopt and the Y Combinator presidency

He cofounded Loopt, a location-based mobile services company that joined Y Combinator’s first intake in summer 2005. The experience took him from building his own product to advising and investing in other startups. [2]

Green Dot completed its acquisition of Loopt in 2012 for approximately $43 million, including compensation and staff retention arrangements. The team joined the buyer’s technology organisation. The transaction value is not equivalent to Altman’s personal proceeds. [7]

In February 2014 Paul Graham announced that Altman would become Y Combinator’s president. Graham would continue meeting founders, while the new president would expand the organisation’s capacity to support more companies. [8]

His presidency lasted from 2014 to 2019. A request for startups he published in 2014 sought companies capable of facilitating employment for a million people: a project-selection ambition, rather than an employment outcome already achieved. [28]

The 2017 annual letter described an organisation combining early-stage batches with the Continuity fund for later-stage investment and research programmes. Altman credited founders and teams, highlighting interests in energy, biotechnology, financial services and machine learning. [9]

Nonprofit research and other responsibilities

In 2015 he announced YC Research for long-term investigation and personally pledged $10 million. The initiative separated from Y Combinator and became OpenResearch in 2020, extending its activities beyond financing businesses expected to deliver a commercial return. [10]

Altman is listed on OpenResearch’s board. The organisation identifies Elizabeth Rhodes as research director and names the academic team responsible for its unconditional cash study. His institutional involvement differs from personally directing or authoring the studies’ findings. [11]

He also briefly led Reddit. In his account of the transition, he explained that he had held the position for eight days before Ellen Pao became interim CEO and Alexis Ohanian returned as executive chairman. [12]

OpenAI: founding, structure and growth

OpenAI’s December 2015 founding announcement named him cochair alongside Elon Musk. [3]

In March 2019 OpenAI introduced a capped-profit structure to raise capital and recruit talent while retaining nonprofit control. Altman was identified as CEO. The change connected financing and computing requirements with a broad research mission. [13]

OpenAI’s 2026 structure distinguishes the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation from OpenAI Group, organised as a Public Benefit Corporation. The foundation governs the group. This institutional division helps explain the respective responsibilities of the CEO and the oversight body. [17]

In January 2025 OpenAI and SoftBank announced Stargate, intending to invest $500 billion over four years in US AI infrastructure. SoftBank would take financial responsibility and OpenAI operational responsibility. The figure represented a proposed investment programme, rather than spending already completed at announcement. [18]

The April 2026 Microsoft agreement update retained Azure as the primary platform while making the technology licence nonexclusive, enabling OpenAI to serve customers through other clouds. [19]

ChatGPT and the spread of generative AI

OpenAI launched ChatGPT on 30 November 2022 as a public research preview of a conversational system. Training incorporated human feedback, and the announcement warned that it could produce plausible but incorrect answers. Altman led the organisation; research and engineering teams developed the system. [4]

Governance crisis and professional controversies

On 17 November 2023 the board dismissed Altman and appointed Mira Murati interim CEO, citing communication and trust concerns. [14]

On 29 November OpenAI announced his return as CEO and a new initial board chaired by Bret Taylor. [15]

In March 2024 the company published a summary of its commissioned WilmerHale review. It attributed the crisis to a breakdown of trust with the previous board, rather than product-safety concerns. The new board endorsed his continued leadership and announced his return as a director. [16]

Elon Musk’s litigation also named Altman as a defendant. A defence filing submitted to the California federal court on 16 January 2026 challenged part of the plaintiff’s expert evidence. The document states the defence’s procedural position. [27]

World and digital identification

In 2019 Altman, Alex Blania and Max Novendstern founded Tools for Humanity, the technology company involved in World’s development. Altman is listed as chairman and Blania as CEO. World Foundation is a separate entity administering the protocol. [20]

Worldcoin’s July 2023 launch brought together World ID, the WLD token and World App. It proposed proving that an individual is a unique human through an identification system including Orb devices. The project prompted debate about biometrics and privacy. [21]

In March 2024 Spain’s data-protection agency provisionally ordered certain Worldcoin processing operations in Spain to stop and previously collected data to be blocked, for up to three months. The measure followed complaints concerning information, minors and withdrawal of consent. [22]

Energy and biotechnology investments

Altman led the $500 million funding round Helion announced in 2021 to develop fusion energy. The company dated his board chairmanship to 2015 and identified him as executive chairman in 2021. His contribution was investment and corporate leadership. [23]

He also chaired Oklo, which develops fission systems. He left that position in April 2025, succeeded by cofounder and CEO Jacob DeWitte. The transition distinguishes his historical involvement from positions that might currently be attributed to him. [24]

He is an investor in Retro Biosciences. An OpenAI collaboration announced in 2025 applied a model to designing proteins associated with cellular reprogramming. Scientific teams performed this laboratory work; it did not constitute clinical treatments developed by Altman. [25]

Ideas about artificial intelligence and governance

In The Intelligence Age, published in September 2024, he argued that greater computing and energy availability would broaden AI’s benefits. The essay anticipated labour-market changes and scientific advances as his vision of the future, also warning that infrastructure shortages would concentrate access. [26]

At the United Nations, he proposed common standards, incident reporting and human control of advanced systems, linked to international cooperation and the distribution of power.[1]
