Who is Shailene Woodley

Shailene Diann Woodley was born on 15 November 1991 in San Bernardino, California. An American actress and producer, she has worked in television, independent cinema, young-adult adaptations and theatre. [1]

An early leading role was Felicity Merriman in the 2005 television film Felicity: An American Girl Adventure. Set in Williamsburg in 1775, it followed a girl on the eve of American independence, with Marcia Gay Harden playing her mother. [6]

Early roles and recognition

In 2008 she began starring in Brenda Hampton’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Across five seasons, the series explored teenage pregnancy and relationships at home and school. Working with Molly Ringwald and Daren Kagasoff gave her experience developing a character over several years. [7]

Alexander Payne’s 2011 film The Descendants paired her with George Clooney in a family drama set in Hawaii. She played one of the daughters of a father trying to rebuild his relationship with his children after his wife’s accident. [8]

In James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now she played Aimee, a student whose life intersects with Miles Teller’s Sutter. The two actors jointly received the Special Jury Award for Acting in Sundance’s US dramatic competition in 2013. [9]

Film roles and production

The Divergent series made Tris one of her best-known characters. She starred in Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant between 2014 and 2016, alongside Theo James as Four. The third film takes the characters beyond the walled city and broadens the series’ conflict. [10]

Released in June 2014, The Fault in Our Stars adapted John Green’s novel under Josh Boone’s direction. Woodley and Ansel Elgort led a love story about teenagers living with cancer, with Laura Dern among the supporting cast. [11]

In Oliver Stone’s 2016 Snowden she worked alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a dramatisation of the former US contractor’s life. The film connected its central character’s personal story with decisions and conflicts surrounding the disclosure of surveillance programmes. [12]

The 2018 film Adrift expanded her involvement into production. She co-produced and played Tami Oldham alongside Sam Claflin in a story of survival after an ocean storm. Baltasar Kormákur directed the film, which brought together several producers. [13]

In Kevin Macdonald’s 2021 The Mauritanian she played lawyer Teri Duncan, working with Jodie Foster’s Nancy Hollander on the defence of Mohamedou Ould Slahi. Tahar Rahim portrayed the detainee at the centre of the film. [14]

Also in 2021 she starred as Jennifer Stirling in The Last Letter from Your Lover. Directed by Augustine Frizzell, the Jojo Moyes adaptation connects love letters from 1965 with a contemporary journalist’s investigation, played by Felicity Jones. [15]

Michael Mann’s Ferrari brought her together with Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz in Venice’s 2023 competition. Set in 1957, the film follows Enzo Ferrari’s family and business conflicts around the Mille Miglia race. [16]

September 2024’s Killer Heat reunited her with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a detective story set in Crete, also featuring Richard Madden. Motor City, distributed in 2026, placed her alongside Alan Ritchson and Ben Foster in Potsy Ponciroli’s revenge thriller. [17, 18]

Big Little Lies, Three Women and Paradise

In Big Little Lies she played single mother Jane Chapman, whose arrival in a community changes relationships among several families. In a 2017 interview she explained how Jean-Marc Vallée used music during filming to help shape the emotional experience of scenes. [19]

STARZ’s 2024 Three Women cast her as Gia, a writer who listens to and connects other women’s stories. Lisa Taddeo created the series, with Laura Eason as showrunner; Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise and Gabrielle Creevy played its other central characters. [20]

In 2026 she joined the second season of Dan Fogelman’s Hulu series Paradise as a recurring guest star. Led by Sterling K. Brown, the series connects a community sheltered in a bunker with the search for answers and survivors beyond it. [21]

Theatre and awards

She made her Broadway debut as Diana Dahl Bennett in Leslye Headland’s Cult of Love, directed by Trip Cullman. The production ran at the Hayes Theater from December 2024 to February 2025. Her performance received the 2025 Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence in the Theater. [22]

She won the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Award for supporting actress for The Descendants. [23]

Her Golden Globe nominations came for The Descendants in 2012 and Big Little Lies in 2018. [1]

In 2026 she won the Emmy for guest actress in a drama series as Annie in Paradise’s Graceland episode. She had previously been nominated in 2017 for playing Jane Chapman in Big Little Lies. [5]

Conservation International and environmental communication

She serves on Conservation International’s board of directors. [2]

In Nature Is Speaking she voices the forest. The film presents nature as narrator and highlights human dependence on ecosystems. Her contribution is vocal performance and communication of a conservation message within a campaign produced by the organisation. [3]

Oceans and water advocacy

In 2019 she joined Greenpeace’s Esperanza expedition in the Sargasso Sea, addressing plastic pollution and ocean protection. Woodley participated in public communication while the scientific team conducted observations of the marine environment, including turtles. [24]

In 2016 she joined Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access pipeline. In a personal TIME essay, she explained her support for water protection and Indigenous communities. [28]

All It Takes and social-emotional learning

She co-founded All It Takes with her mother, Lori Woodley, in 2010. Built around educational experiences for young people, the organisation marked its fifteenth anniversary in 2025. Its work is delivered through its programmes, professionals and partnerships. [25]

The organisation focuses on social-emotional skills: recognising situations, making choices and acting responsibly towards others. Its activities serve young people and the adults supporting them, including educators, using participatory exercises to address empathy, communication and cooperation. [26]

All It Takes also offers Flex for Success, workplace workshops on communication, collaboration, conflict and adapting to change. Options range from short sessions to full days. The programme belongs to the organisation Woodley co-founded and is delivered by its teams. [27]
