A temporary load-bearing structure
Falsework and propping transmit loads while a structure cannot support itself or needs support during an intervention. Their temporary nature does not reduce stability requirements. Safety depends on the load path from the supported element to a base capable of receiving the forces.

What the design must establish
Geometry, permanent and construction loads, construction sequence, supporting ground or floor and lateral actions are relevant. Imperfections, connections and bracing must also be considered. A manufacturer’s table is applicable only when its assumptions match the actual configuration; a change may require fresh justification.
Erection and acceptance
Damaged components, unauthorised mixing of systems or improvised bases compromise the whole assembly. The planned sequence must be followed and verticality, supports, connections and stabilisation checked before loading. An incomplete assembly needs its own measures to prevent collapse and falls by those erecting it.
Control during use
Props must not be removed to create a passage, or loads added without checking the effects. Construction changes: stored materials, vibration, impacts and modifications by other contractors arise. A responsible person must be able to identify the authorised configuration, detect deviations and stop an operation if the planned safety conditions are absent.
Dismantling and hypothetical example
Unloading and removal require a sequence that avoids unexpected forces. In a hypothetical example, a crew removes a diagonal member because it obstructs movement. The vertical load may still appear supported, but lateral stability has been reduced. The component must be treated as structural, rather than a dispensable obstacle.
Documentation and limitations
Drawings, assumptions, instructions, assembly checks and authorised changes must be retained in a form understandable to those executing the work. Temporary support may require independent design review according to complexity. This article explains the concept and controls; it does not size falsework or determine when a particular structure can have its supports removed.
