High-pressure water jetting safety

High-pressure water cleaning can penetrate tissue, propel debris and destabilise an operator. Using water does not make the process harmless or remove the hazards of contaminants present on the surface being cleaned.

In brief

Compatible equipment, a separated work area and control of the jet are central to planned operation.

Select a system for the task

Pressure is not the only relevant parameter: flow, nozzle and configuration determine reaction force and jet behaviour. An improvised combination can exceed a component’s capacity or cause loss of control. Use the configuration approved for the particular equipment and task.

Where the task permits, mechanisation or remote operation reduces proximity to the cleaning point. Hoses, connections and stopping devices need inspection and maintenance. Changing accessories or repairing the circuit requires prior control of the energy stored within the system.

Separate and prepare the area

The boundary must protect against the direct jet, rebound and dislodged material. Uninvolved people should not enter during work. Stable access, drainage and good housekeeping prevent water and hoses from creating additional slip or trip hazards around the operation.

Identify electrical equipment, nearby installations and substances in coatings or deposits. Cleaning can disperse chemical or biological contaminants. Combustion engines introduce dangerous exhaust emissions into enclosed spaces and must not be regarded as a harmless source of power.

Operator control and protection

The control system must allow safe stopping while retaining the functions intended by the manufacturer. Do not defeat triggers or safety devices to reduce effort. The work team needs effective communication and clear criteria for interrupting the operation when conditions change.

The operator needs a stable position, without working from a ladder or overreaching beyond the intended support. Select eye, face, body, foot and hearing protection for the process. Ordinary waterproof clothing is not equivalent to protection against an industrial water jet.

Respond to changes and incidents

Stop work if someone enters the area, a fault develops or conditions change. Pressure to finish cleaning does not justify holding a defective connection together or searching for a leak by hand. Repairs are work for appropriately competent personnel.

A High-pressure fluid injection injury can look small while concealing substantial damage. Suspected penetration by the jet needs urgent medical assessment and information about the equipment and contaminants involved. The external appearance of the wound cannot establish that the injury is minor.
