Identify the form being used

Hydrazine can be handled in different formulations, so the concentration, composition and process conditions must be identified. Conditions applying to the anhydrous substance cannot automatically be transferred to a solution. The inventory must include lines, containers, waste and maintenance operations that may retain product even when production has stopped.

Toxicity and contact

NIOSH lists eye and skin injuries, respiratory irritation, neurological effects and concern about occupational carcinogenicity. ILO/WHO notes possible effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system, as well as skin sensitisation. Skin absorption means that splashes and contaminated clothing must be reviewed alongside airborne exposure. Significant exposure requires medical assistance, rather than simply checking for visible irritation.

Reactivity is particularly important

Hydrazine is a reducing agent and can react violently with oxidisers, acids and other materials. NIOSH warns that it may ignite spontaneously in contact with certain oxidisers or porous materials. Absorbents, containers and cleaning procedures must therefore not be improvised. System materials and spill response materials must be specifically selected for the product.

Containment and work preparation

Closed systems and fewer open interventions take priority. Reviewing chemical incompatibilities also covers tools, seals, maintenance materials and waste. Before opening equipment, isolation and safe conditions are verified according to the procedure. A lack of oxygen does not establish that all decomposition hazards have been eliminated.

Protection and emergencies

Selecting protection requires knowledge of the concentration and task, with attention to glove and clothing permeation. The emergency plan defines isolation, evacuation and specialist response. A small spill does not become an ordinary cleaning task simply because of its size. Workers need accessible information and must know how to raise the alarm without approaching the source unnecessarily.

Prevention example

In a hypothetical example, a maintenance task replaces a circuit component. The preliminary review checks the compatibility of its material and cleaning products, as well as leak tightness. The procedure is validated before hydrazine is introduced. Follow-up retains the intervention conditions and checks, avoiding substitution of materials with apparently equivalent alternatives without technical assessment.
