What is Cultura5Z?
Cultura5Z for Healthy Companies is the official name of an organizational model promoted by the ORP International Foundation. Its stated starting point is the Vision Zero mindset, the prevention strategy promoted by the International Social Security Association, which Cultura5Z expands beyond traditional safety.
It is not a standard or a legal requirement. It is a voluntary framework for self-assessment and improvement, accompanied by a seal that the Foundation awards to organizations that complete its process. It is important to clearly distinguish it from certifiable management system standards such as ISO 45001 , which are audited by certification bodies accredited according to international accreditation rules.
The model is aimed at companies in any sector that want to organize their preventive management, health policy, environmental performance, equality policy and training efforts into a single narrative.
The five axes of the model
The name 5Z comes from the five zero commitments that structure the model, as published by the initiative itself.
- Zero Accidents. Prevention of workplace accidents through hazard identification, risk control, and visible management leadership.
- ZeroEnfermedades. Prevention of occupational disease and work-related health damage, including the psychosocial dimension and health promotion .
- ZeroWaste. Environmental performance of the organization, an area that traditional prevention does not cover and that the model explicitly incorporates.
- ZeroInequality. Equal opportunities and treatment within the organization.
- Zero Ignorance. Training, information and competence of people, understood as a condition for the four previous axes to function.
The first two pillars largely correspond to the traditional content of occupational risk prevention. The remaining three go beyond that scope and incorporate sustainability, equality, and knowledge management, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a framework with which the initiative declares its alignment.
Relationship with Vision Zero and the seven Golden Rules
Cultura5Z declares its intention to integrate and expand upon the seven Golden Rules of the International Social Security Association’s Vision Zero concept. The relationship between these two frameworks should be clarified to avoid confusion.
Vision Zero is a global prevention strategy promoted by the International Social Security Association, structured around three dimensions—safety, health, and well-being—and seven practical implementation rules. It is an open and free commitment, requiring no accreditation process.
Cultura5Z is a different initiative, promoted by a private foundation, which takes that conceptual basis, adds the pillars of environment, equality, and knowledge, and associates it with its own seal. Neither the International Social Security Association awards the 5Z seal, nor does the ORP International Foundation manage the Vision Zero campaign.
The 5Z seal
The initiative offers the 5Z Seal, a private and voluntary distinction awarded by the ORP International Foundation to organizations that complete its process. Its public documentation describes the seal as providing international accreditation to the organization as a healthy company; however, it is important to note that this distinction is awarded by the promoting entity itself.
The distinction between these concepts is important. A badge is awarded by the organization that creates it, using its own criteria. A certification is issued by a certification body against a standard, such as ISO 45001. Accreditation is the formal recognition of that certification body’s competence by the national accreditation body. And regulatory compliance is a legal obligation, independent of the previous three. The 5Z Seal belongs to the first category.
The details of the evaluation procedure, scoring criteria, and validity period of the seal are not fully published on the public websites consulted, and therefore this information sheet does not describe them. Interested organizations should request these details directly from the sponsoring entity.
Like any voluntary certification, the seal does not exempt from compliance with applicable preventive regulations nor does it replace the legal audit of the prevention system where this is mandatory.
Contribution to safety and health at work
The most useful contribution of the model is its attempt to connect prevention with other organizational policies that are often managed separately. In many companies, safety, health, the environment, equality, and training fall under different departments, with their own indicators and timelines, and this fragmentation hinders management commitment.
A framework that requires looking at all five areas at once facilitates this integration work, which in the Spanish legal system coincides with the principle of integrating prevention into the overall activity of the company.
The scope of the model also defines its function. Cultura5Z is not intended to replace a management system, certification, or applicable legal obligations: it is a framework for guidance and communication, distinct from an occupational health and safety management system .
Practical application
An organization considering adopting the model can use its five pillars as a framework for an internal assessment: what indicators it has for each pillar, who is responsible for them, and what evidence can be provided. This exercise often reveals imbalances, for example, well-developed accident rate indicators versus incipient management of psychosocial risk or training.
In external communications, precision is key. Presenting the 5Z seal as a regulatory compliance certification or as recognition from the International Social Security Association would be inaccurate. It should be described as what it is: a private mark of a healthy business model promoted by the ORP International Foundation.
