What LTI means

Learning Tools Interoperability is a 1EdTech standard for integrating learning platforms and external tools. It enables a tool to be launched from the learning environment with information about context and the authorised person. It does not mean importing all its content into the LMS or placing a public link that anyone can open.

Platform and tool

The platform initiates the interaction and the tool provides an activity or service, such as an assessment or specialist resource. Both sides need compatible configuration. Deployment, context, roles and permissions are identified. An LTI option in two products does not guarantee they support the same versions or every additional service.

Security and shared information

LTI 1.3 uses a security model based on authentication and authorisation standards. This does not remove the need to review which data are sent or who administers the connection. Personal fields and permissions are adjusted to the purpose. How to remove an integration and manage changes in owners or technical credentials is also established.

Additional services

LTI Advantage includes services that can facilitate content selection, grade exchange and access to names or roles as authorised. Each function must be checked at both ends. An activity that opens correctly may not return a grade, or may use a different scale. The functional agreement should describe expectations for the preventive training platform.

Test example

In a hypothetical example, a preventive course uses an external simulation. Learner access, the attempt, result and its arrival in the course record are tested. It is also checked that a participant from another group cannot access someone else’s information. Closing and reopening verify continuity and distinguish a visual error from a tracking failure.

What LTI does not solve

The standard does not itself guarantee accessibility, pedagogical suitability or compliance with every preventive training requirement. The external tool still needs content, privacy and service review. Acceptance combines technical interoperability with evidence that the participant completes the intended experience and the organisation receives an interpretable record.
