Look beyond the blade
A hold-down clamp can crush fingers while securing the sheet, before the blade completes its cut. Check that openings in Machine guards prevent access to both components while retaining the visibility needed to position material.
Programmable back gauges, supports and ejectors may move behind the machine. Someone collecting offcuts must not be exposed to these movements or able to reach the blade from the rear. Include this secondary working position in the assessment, even if it is used only briefly.
Feed and collect without entering danger
The workstation should allow sheets to be supported and aligned without holding them at hazardous points. A part too small for the intended handling method needs a different holding arrangement or process, rather than fingers closer to the clamp.
Chutes, tables or collection trolleys can remove the need to enter the rear area. Their design should be reviewed for new access paths, sharp edges or trapping points. A pause between cuts is not an opportunity to retrieve material that has become stuck.
Controls and coordination
An exposed or poorly located foot control can initiate an unintended cycle. Review its guarding, position and the operator’s posture. If a sheet needs two people, define who controls the cycle and how the helper is protected. Verbal coordination alone cannot replace technical safeguards.
Interlocking devices and other protective devices need checks under the machine’s maintenance plan. If a guard makes it difficult to see or align the sheet, review the workstation; do not remove the guard during production to compensate for that difficulty.
Intervention and upkeep
The blade and other components may move under gravity or stored energy even after power is switched off. Maintenance and blade changes require competent personnel, suitable handling means and an Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure covering these energies.
Distinguish protection from sharp edges using appropriate Protective gloves from protection against crushing. Record abnormal return movement, unexpected cycling or damaged guarding. Where protection is compromised, keep the machine out of service until the fault has been assessed and corrected.
