What is actually assessed

Metalworking fluids lubricate and cool during machining. They include oils and water-based mixtures containing different additives; they are not one substance with a single hazard profile. Assessment should identify the product, its working concentration and the tasks during which it is released. The composition of workpieces and cutting tools also matters because material from them can enter the circulating fluid during machining.

The fluid changes inside the machine

Freshly prepared product does not necessarily represent fluid circulating weeks later. Metal particles, tramp oils and degradation products may accumulate. Water-based mixtures can also develop microbial contamination. The concentrate’s safety data sheet is therefore a starting point, but does not on its own describe every hazard associated with the used circuit or its cleaning. Maintenance information and actual operating conditions are essential to the assessment.

Two important exposure routes

Splashes, wet workpieces and contaminated surfaces encourage skin contact. Mist formation allows inhalation of fluid components and contaminants. Reported effects include dermatitis and respiratory disease, including occupational asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Consider routine work as well as opening enclosures, removing swarf, emptying sumps and servicing filters. A worker who does not operate the machine may still encounter significant exposure while carrying out these supporting tasks.

Contain mist and avoid contact

Prioritise enclosed systems, controlled delivery and suitable local exhaust ventilation. Opening arrangements must respect the enclosure design and the time needed for mist clearance. Avoid turning cleaning into an aerosol source through compressed-air blowing. Select hand protection for the task and chemical compatibility while also considering entanglement hazards near moving machinery; no single glove recommendation is appropriate for every machining operation.

Maintain and verify the system

The plan should define fluid-monitoring parameters for the product and process, record results and specify responses to deviations. Correcting contamination does not mean adding biocide on an improvised basis. Suppliers, maintenance and prevention staff should coordinate cleaning, replenishment and additive control. Extraction checks and occupational exposure sampling answer different, complementary questions. Both need to be linked to the conditions in which the machine actually operates.

Signals that require review

Skin problems, coughing, breathing difficulty or clusters of symptoms warrant exposure review and access to medical assessment. Fluid that looks clean or lacks an unpleasant smell is not proven safe. Health surveillance does not replace maintenance. Substitution should compare the complete hazard profile of the replacement product rather than assuming that descriptions such as vegetable-based or biodegradable automatically mean harmless to the worker.
