NOM-022-STPS-2015: static electricity in Mexico

NOM-022-STPS-2015 sets controls for static electricity and lightning protection requirements in Mexico.

In brief

Earthing must suit the process and be verified; a visible connection does not prove continuity or effectiveness.

The process determines charge accumulation

NOM-022-STPS-2015, listed as current in the official catalogue, regulates conditions for controlling generation and accumulation of static electricity in Mexican workplaces. It also sets requirements for protection against atmospheric electrical discharges. Both need attention, but they are different energy sources and are not resolved by a single check.

Assessment considers friction, conveying or pouring, substance properties, surroundings and installation materials. The static electricity entry explains the phenomenon; the standard specifies the controls and evidence required at the workplace.

Connect and demonstrate continuity

Measures may include earthing, equipotential bonding, conductive or antistatic materials and dissipation or neutralisation devices, as appropriate. Selection depends on the process and the possibility that a discharge could cause fire, explosion or other harm.

The standard requires earth-network resistance measurement and continuity checks at connection points at least every twelve months. These are different checks. A visible clamp does not establish effective electrical contact, and one resistance reading does not automatically represent every connection in the system.

Humidity and lightning protection

Humidity can be used as a control in particular scenarios, but not where it would cause a dangerous reaction with substances. Where it forms part of a fire or explosion barrier, the relevant monitoring and alarm requirements apply. It is not a universal solution suitable for every product.

Lightning protection requires identification of applicable conditions and design appropriate to the establishment. A static electricity report does not, by itself, justify the lightning protection system or demonstrate that all atmospheric discharge hazards have been addressed.

Evidence supporting the work

Records need to identify measurements, continuity and humidity where relevant. Training explains hazards and correct use of controls; information may also need to reach contractors, suppliers and visitors according to their exposure.

For example, changing a hose, container or coating can alter intended continuity. Review such changes before restarting operations. This entry does not prescribe improvised connections or one resistance value suitable for every purpose. Different functions and applicable criteria must remain distinct, with checks interpreted by competent personnel.
