What NTEP means
NTEP stands for Nexo Técnico Epidemiológico Previdenciário. The Brazilian system uses associations between economic-activity and disease codes to support assessment of the nature of an incapacity. Its logic is based on patterns observed in groups, not an assertion that everyone in an activity has the same disease or identical exposure conditions.
Economic activity and diagnosis
The instrument links the CNAE activity classification and disease-classification codes. Official sources describe a matrix of associations within the social-security framework. Correctly identifying both elements matters, but a code alone does not describe a complete work history. One enterprise may include different tasks, and one person may have changed activity over time.
Its role in assessment
Official documentation places NTEP alongside other ways of establishing a link between harm and work. An epidemiological association is one element of the analysis, not a self-diagnosis tool or a way to decide a benefit unilaterally. Individual decisions belong to the competent procedure and must consider the applicable technical and legal framework. This entry explains the concept without resolving particular cases.
What prevention can learn
An association signal may guide questions about working conditions, exposed groups and the need to review controls. Its preventive value does not depend on waiting for a final administrative decision. The team can study actual activity and collective data with appropriate professional participation. In doing so, it must avoid using a statistical category to label workers or exclude them from a job.
Analysis example
If health problems appear concentrated in an activity, tasks, duration, organisational changes and existing measures should be reviewed. Record quality and group size also need checking. The example presumes no causality: it shows how a signal can initiate a more precise investigation. A population association requires interpretation and does not replace knowledge of the case and its exposures.
Limitations and confidentiality
The absence of an association in a matrix does not demonstrate that work cannot influence a disease. Nor does an association explain every factor in a case. Collective health surveillance explores patterns while preserving confidentiality. Epidemiological analysis, individual care, prevention and benefit recognition should be kept distinct, with sources and periods identified so conclusions can be rigorously reviewed.
