What is ACAMI?

ACAMI is a non-profit civil association established in Argentina in 1997. It brings together private healthcare providers and insurers that are part of the Argentine healthcare system. It is a sectoral chamber within the private healthcare field, not a public agency or an insurance company.

It is important to clarify from the outset what ACAMI is not: it is neither a Workers’ Compensation Insurance Company (ART) nor an occupational safety and health entity. Its scope is the general health coverage of the population affiliated with its member entities, a system distinct from the one in Argentina that specifically covers work-related contingencies.

Purpose and scope of action

ACAMI’s purpose is to represent and coordinate Argentine private healthcare providers and insurers, and to offer a forum for reflection and debate on healthcare policy. Its scope of action is Argentina, with activities extending to various provinces throughout the country.

Functions and main lines of work

ACAMI’s activity is mainly structured around two lines.

  • Argentine Congress of Health. The association’s annual flagship event, conceived as a space for reflection and debate on health activity and policy in Argentina.
  • Regional conferences and activities. Technical and discussion meetings organized in different Argentine cities, aimed at professionals and entities of the private health system.

Contribution to safety and health at work

ACAMI’s contribution to occupational safety and health is indirect. ACAMI does not manage workers’ compensation insurance or provide prevention services: it groups together private health insurance companies, funders, and providers that serve, among other populations, workers, but they do so through general health insurance coverage and not through the specific system for coverage of workplace accidents and occupational diseases.

In Argentina, this specific coverage is provided by Workers’ Compensation Insurance Companies (ARTs), entities of a different nature than those grouped by ACAMI. Distinguishing between these two systems—general health and occupational risk—is important to avoid attributing functions to ACAMI or its member entities that they do not perform. Their connection to the field of prevention is based on thematic proximity, as both operate within the healthcare system that serves the working population, and on institutional participation through their presence on committees of organizations linked to occupational risk prevention.

Relationship with the ORP International Foundation

ACAMI’s presence on the ORP International Foundation’s institutional advisory committee is that of an Argentine civil association of prepaid medical entities and private health system funders, with an indirect relationship to occupational safety and health. Being part of this committee does not imply that ACAMI carries out its own occupational risk prevention activities, which remain outside its corporate purpose.

Practical application

For a workplace safety professional in Argentina, ACAMI is primarily useful as a reference for the private healthcare system alongside the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Companies (ARTs), not as a source of information on occupational risks. The Argentine Health Congress and the association’s publications address general health policy issues; for matters of coverage for workplace accidents and occupational diseases, the reference points are the ARTs and Argentine occupational risk regulations, not ACAMI.
