Costa Rica’s INS

The Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) is a Costa Rican state insurer offering compulsory occupational risk insurance, known as RT. This coverage addresses accidents and diseases connected with work. The Superintendencia General de Seguros identifies INS among the entities currently providing this compulsory insurance in Costa Rica.

At a glance

INS RT insurance combines healthcare and cash benefits with policy categories designed for different activities. Policy administration, declarations and event reporting relate to insurance coverage, while workplace prevention requires continuing action by the employer.

A specific compulsory insurance product

RT operates within Costa Rica’s occupational risk framework. It concerns events arising from work, rather than every illness or personal accident. SUGESE explains that insurers determine their rates, subject to supervisory approval. Compulsory insurance should therefore not be confused with a single premium rate applicable to every employer.

Healthcare and cash benefits

INS information lists medical, hospital and pharmaceutical care, rehabilitation, prostheses and vocational readaptation. Cash benefits include temporary incapacity subsidies, payments for permanent incapacity or death and other specified expenses. Eligibility and calculation depend on the protected event and the relevant legal and policy conditions; the listed categories are not interchangeable benefits.

Categories for different work situations

The catalogue lists RT General alongside RT Hogar, Agrícola, Construcción, Cosechas, Ocasional and Formación Técnica Dual. These reflect differences in the work or insurance arrangement. A product name does not automatically establish that a person or activity is included: the issued policy category and declared information need to be considered.

Reporting and case documents

INS provides forms for insurance administration, accident notification, reopening cases and reporting suspected occupational diseases. Digital RT platforms are also available. Documentation connects the event, activity and affected worker to the case. Requesting renewed care or reopening a case has a different purpose from buying or amending a policy.

Recognition of prevention management

The website publishes a Homologación de la Gestión Preventiva programme with participation rules. Its stated aim is to strengthen prevention at insured employers. The existence of incentives should not be treated as an automatic discount or a release from responsibility. Employers retain their duties to manage safe conditions and meet insurance obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Is INS the only RT insurer?

No. Current SUGESE information also identifies MNK Seguros. This entry describes INS without claiming that it has present-day commercial exclusivity.

Are RT Hogar and RT General the same category?

No. INS presents them separately for different insurance situations. The relevant policy should identify the category and applicable conditions.
