A mutual institution with its own identity
IST’s statutes define it as a private-law corporation legally based in Viña del Mar. Its purposes include administering social insurance, training, occupational health and rehabilitation. The traditional name and current statutory name identify one institution. ISL is a separate organisation: the public administrator of the occupational insurance scheme.
Healthcare and occupational case management
The institutional website lists health centres, accident guidance and DIAT and DIEP forms for reporting occupational accidents and diseases. Portal Salud provides access to examinations, results and health information. Portal Trabajador allows workers to submit documents needed to manage their cases. These services have different functions from Oficina de Adherentes, the business portal for affiliated employers.
Health surveillance and psychosocial risks
IST publishes resources on occupational noise through PREXOR, musculoskeletal disorders, silica and manual handling. Its psychosocial risk materials address the CEAL-SM/SUSESO questionnaire, the implementation committee and the stages of assessment. These resources support the identification and management of exposure; their availability does not establish that a particular employer has completed an appropriate assessment or implemented the necessary controls.
Training and joint participation
Public resources include synchronous and asynchronous training, a prevention library and IST Educa. Its joint committee community provides material for establishing and running Comités Paritarios de Higiene y Seguridad, together with an accreditation system and a port-sector joint committee network. This connects training with participation by employers and workers and offers resources for preventive organisation within affiliated businesses.
Support for preventive management
IST provides information on Supreme Decree 44 and the management of emergencies and disasters. Assistance from the insurance administrator complements each employer’s preventive organisation. Mutual membership does not replace hazard identification, risk control, information or worker training. Healthcare and financial benefits operate within the statutory framework and the procedures applicable to the occupational contingency concerned.
Frequently asked questions
Are IST and Instituto de Seguridad del Trabajo separate organisations?
No. The latter is its traditional name. Its statutes and SUSESO record currently identify the entity as IST Organismo de Seguridad y Salud del Trabajo.
What are DIAT and DIEP used for?
DIAT is the individual occupational accident report; DIEP is the individual occupational disease report. Filing one supplies information for the relevant procedure and does not, by itself, determine its outcome.
