Packaging machine safety

Packaging machines combine feeding, filling, closing and cutting. Safeguarding must cover the package path and the practical tasks of format changes, material replenishment and cleaning.

In brief

Protection must remain effective when the product, film roll or pack format changes.

Packages enter; hands must stay clear

An opening used to feed a tray or discharge a bag can also allow someone to reach a roller, pusher or blade. Assessment must consider front, side, lower and discharge access. A small opening is not automatically safe when the dangerous part remains within reach.

Machine guards must suit the task and the time needed for the hazard to cease. Handling tools may help position material but cannot replace necessary safeguarding. Equipment connected upstream and downstream must also be considered when assessing access and unexpected movement.

Format and material changes

A narrower tray or a different film roll can alter access to moving parts. The procedure must identify adjustments intended for operators and those reserved for authorised personnel, with the manufacturer’s required protective conditions. Holding sensors in place or leaving doors partly open is not an acceptable way to keep producing.

Film rolls need handling arrangements suited to their weight, dimensions and mounting position. Suitable trolleys or lifting devices reduce awkward manual handling and improvised supports. The selected aid must not introduce a new crushing point while presenting the spindle to the machine.

Blockages and cleaning

A crumpled bag, product residue or sealing fault requires the planned stopping and intervention procedure. Reaching inside while another person operates the controls turns a production fault into direct exposure. A control stop does not provide isolation of hazardous energy, and clearing material may release stored movement.

Machines using heated sealing also require assessment of residual heat. Cleaning must be compatible with electrical components, guards and safety devices, without improvised dismantling. Production and cleaning staff need consistent instructions for the same equipment, including who may perform each intervention.

What to check before acceptance

Observe replenishment, reject removal and format changes as well as normal production. If routine tasks require reaching dangerous parts, the arrangement is incomplete. Document functional protective checks and provide task-specific training before release. Repeated feeding faults deserve investigation: they may indicate design or maintenance problems rather than a reason to remove guards. Review modifications and new packaging materials before putting them into regular use.
