Why this is not an ordinary load
A horizontal roll can roll away, while an upright roll can lose stability. Its size restricts visibility and creates crushing points against other rolls, machinery or walls. Weight alone is insufficient: diameter, width, orientation and material condition also matter.
Review the whole sequence from production discharge to dispatch. Transfers between conveyor, floor, clamp and vehicle are separate stages involving different people and equipment. Identify where uncontrolled movement could begin and who might be standing in its path at that moment.
Match the clamp and lift truck
For Forklifts, the relevant capacity is that of the truck with the attachment installed under its actual operating conditions. Do not infer it solely from the clamp’s rating plate. The driver needs training for that attachment and the particular rolls being handled.
Clamping force must suit the material and equipment: too little may allow slippage and too much may damage the load. Check contact pads, mountings and possible leaks against manufacturer instructions. Multiple-roll handling requires a specifically suitable configuration; wrapping alone does not establish a secure combined load.
Separate people from the travel path
Arrange routes and waiting positions so nobody is trapped between a roll and an obstruction. Uneven floors can change rolling direction. If the load blocks the view ahead, the handling method must address that limitation before movement begins.
Avoid depending on manual pushing of heavy rolls or using the body to stop them. Jams and rolls bound together require a specific procedure; dropping them to separate them introduces impact hazards and the possibility of losing control of the load.
Store and load without losing stability
Specify orientation, supports and storage limits for the rolls and installation concerned. Keep aisles clear and check deformation or damage that might affect the grip or stability of the stored assembly, rather than treating damaged rolls as normal stock.
During road transport, upright rolls can migrate, while horizontal rolls also require prevention of rolling. Plan restraint and unloading order together: removing lashings or part of the load changes the conditions for the rolls that remain on the vehicle.
