Identity and occurrence
Phosphine, PH3, has CAS number 7803-51-2. INRS describes use in stored-product fumigation and semiconductor manufacturing, alongside potential release in other processes. The gas should not be confused with products that can generate it. Assessment needs to identify the specific treatment or process and the possible presence of gas in associated spaces or materials rather than relying on an informal product description.
People beyond the applicator
Reception, transport and handling may expose people who did not participate in fumigation. HSE warns that cargo may release absorbed fumigant even after previous ventilation. Missing warning labels do not establish absence. Coordinate information among shipper, carrier, receiver and work supervisors without treating a general delivery declaration as automatic permission to enter or handle a space that may still contain fumigant.
Why smell is unreliable
Pure phosphine has no useful warning odour; the smell associated with technical product relates to impurities. It should not determine whether an atmosphere is safe. Inhalation can cause severe respiratory and systemic effects, including death. Suspected exposure needs the emergency procedure and medical attention. Nobody should improvise an entry to rescue another person without the required training, equipment and planned arrangements.
Verify conditions before work
Releasing an area for work should rest on competent assessment and appropriate checks rather than elapsed time alone. Instruments must suit the gas and conditions, with verified function. Exposure measurement and access authorisation are related but different decisions: one spot sample does not automatically describe the whole load or later emissions, particularly when conditions or the arrangement of goods changes.
Fumigation is specialist work
Application needs trained personnel, authorised products and procedures appropriate to the country and use. Define access exclusion, communication, monitoring and incident response. This article provides no doses, gas-generation methods, treatment times or entry instructions. Nor does it justify replacing a specific assessment with a generically selected mask where the concentration is unknown and the atmosphere may be immediately dangerous.
Traceable receiving arrangements
Retain treatment identification, responsible persons, checks and the conditions under which handling is permitted. Review the decision if location changes, a previously closed space is opened or new evidence appears. Include contractors and later shifts in communication. The aim is for fumigation information to travel with the goods and reach the person actually carrying out the work, not remain only in shipping documents.
