Trigger type changes the risk
With contact actuation, a nail can be fired when the trigger and nose contact are both activated. Recoil or an unintended contact may result in another fastener being driven. Full sequential actuation requires a defined sequence for each shot and reduces this risk.
Selection should favour safer mechanisms and account for actual tasks. Where a mode selector is fitted, users need to identify the active setting; sharing tools without understanding their configuration can introduce mistakes. Contact safety mechanisms and other protective devices must never be defeated.
The path may extend beyond the workpiece
Consider both the material and what is behind it: a nail may pass through or deflect when it encounters a knot, another fastener or a hard component. The supporting hand and a colleague’s body must stay outside the potential trajectory.
Overhead work, confined positions or unstable footing require reconsideration of the method. Production pressure or the need to hold both tool and material do not justify firing without suitable support and control.
Pneumatic and cordless tools have different energy sources
Pneumatic tools introduce hoses, connections and an air supply; cordless tools have batteries and their own mechanisms. Establishing a safe condition must follow the specific manual, including disconnection from the energy source where required before clearing jams or handling fasteners.
Do not attempt to release a nail with the tool pointed towards anyone or improvise repairs to the firing mechanism. Repeated jams call for authorised examination of fastener compatibility and tool condition. This entry does not cover powder-actuated fastening tools.
Training and incident response
Training on Hand and portable tools must address the nail gun and its actuation mode specifically. Eye protection should also cover other exposed people nearby; noise and the remaining workstation hazards need assessment as well.
Unexpected discharges, ricochets and near misses should be recorded so the working method can be corrected. Seek immediate medical attention after a nail gun injury even when the wound appears minor. Its external appearance alone cannot establish the extent of injury.
