What QA means in occupational prevention

QA stands for quality assurance. In industrial hygiene, it covers the decisions and checks that make a measurement defensible: from choosing the exposure to investigate through to reporting the result and explaining its limitations. It is neither a certification in itself nor a guarantee that the working environment is safe.

Related concept: Occupational hygiene measurement and sampling.

What needs to be controlled

The survey needs an explicit objective, defined people or tasks represented, a method suited to the contaminant and a duration consistent with the question. It must also identify instruments, sampling media, transport conditions and the receiving laboratory. If a sample loses its identification or is stored incorrectly, a highly precise analysis cannot repair that problem.

Specific controls depend on the method. They may include blanks, flow checks, reference standards, analytical controls and integrity checks. These should be agreed before visiting the workplace, together with the criteria for accepting, repeating or invalidating results.

QA is not the same as quality control

Quality assurance organises the system to prevent errors; quality control checks characteristics of an operation or result. Reviewing a label or analysing a blank is a control. Defining how all samples are labelled, training the people who collect them and periodically checking the procedure belong to assurance.

A deviation should not disappear when the data are transferred to a spreadsheet. Recording it makes it possible to assess whether it affects only one sample, the entire survey or the interpretation of exposure.

How to review a measurement report

A useful report allows the reader to reconstruct what was done, when, where and using which method. It should be possible to connect the result with the person or situation assessed, identify units and method limitations, and distinguish measured data from estimates. Conclusions must answer the original objective rather than simply present a table of numbers.

The laboratory’s competence and technical scope matter. Accreditation does not automatically cover every contaminant, method or activity that a laboratory may offer.

Hypothetical example

A company wants to investigate exposure during equipment cleaning. Before sampling, the practitioner agrees the medium and preservation conditions with the laboratory. At the end, a flow check falls outside the specified criterion. The affected samples are identified, the incident is documented and their technical treatment is decided, rather than including them in the conclusion without qualification.

Limits of quality assurance

QA improves confidence in evidence, but it does not make a single sample representative of every working day. Nor does it replace process assessment or established preventive measures. An impeccable documentation system needs to be accompanied by observation of actual work and critical review of the results.
