What the operation includes
Formwork shapes fresh concrete and maintains its geometry during the planned process. Safety covers erection, pouring, stabilisation and removal. Falsework or propping carries loads; distinguishing these functions helps avoid removing a support in the belief that only a mould component is being removed.
Related concept: Construction site safety.
Before concreting
Configuration, supports, connections, bracing and capacity for expected loads must be checked. Pouring sequence and material storage matter as much as final weight. Access and work equipment must not rely on people walking over incomplete areas or components not prepared as platforms.
Falls and panel movement
Edges and openings need protection throughout every phase. Lifting panels requires designated points, suitable accessories and an exclusion area. Releasing ties without first securing stability may cause overturning. Wind, nearby electrical hazards and interference with other crews must enter the planning.
When and how to strike formwork
Removal must follow an approved sequence and the structure’s actual condition. Elapsed time alone does not demonstrate that concrete can support every load. Supports remaining in place, necessary reshoring and safe destinations for removed components, nails and panels must be identified.
Hypothetical example
Material packages are unloaded onto a floor before its support system is complete. Although their weight may appear small compared with the finished building, they act on a different temporary phase. The answer is to verify that phase’s permitted loading and organise deliveries, rather than rely on the concrete eventually gaining strength.
What needs to be defined
A useful procedure identifies responsibilities, authorised assembly, pre-pour checks, loading restrictions and authorisation for removal. System instructions and the design are not replaced by a generic PPE list. The cited guides provide technical criteria; administrative obligations in Australia or the United Kingdom do not automatically transfer to another jurisdiction.
