A complete protective measure

Safety extra-low voltage combines a limited voltage with a source and circuit maintaining specific separation conditions. A label stating 12 or 24 volts is insufficient. Protection depends on how the voltage is produced and on preventing hazardous voltage from another circuit entering the system.

Related concept: Electrical risk.

Distinguishing SELV, PELV and FELV

Spain’s REBT distinguishes safety, protective and functional extra-low voltage, known as MBTS, MBTP and MBTF respectively. Their connection and protection conditions differ. A supply reduced for functional reasons may be FELV and require other electric shock protective measures. Calling every low-voltage output “safety voltage” leads to incorrect conclusions.

Source and separation

The source must meet the relevant safety requirements, and wiring must remain separated from other circuits. Connectors must prevent incorrect connections between incompatible systems. SELV has specific conditions concerning earth and exposed conductive parts of other circuits. Do not add connections intuitively or reuse a transformer without checking its function.

The environment still matters

Moisture, extensive body contact and conductive locations affect the protection required. The Spanish guide explains that the REBT generally defines the extra-low-voltage range up to 50 V AC and 75 V DC; this does not mean those values are automatically acceptable for every task or location.

Hypothetical example

A portable lamp operates at 24 V, but its supply equipment has no demonstrated safety separation. The voltage alone does not establish that the assembly is SELV. Selection must check the source, luminaire, connections and location; changing only the bulb does not resolve the circuit’s protective conditions.

Limits and documentation

Extra-low voltage does not eliminate other hazards, such as short circuits, overheating or fires associated with high-energy sources. Retain equipment instructions and documentation and verify the installation. This article explains the technical distinction and Spanish framework; specific design must apply the location’s special conditions and relevant standards, without extrapolating figures from another jurisdiction.
