Stoffenmanager: estimating chemical exposure

Stoffenmanager supports chemical risk assessment and estimation of inhalation exposure. Its output depends on the description of the product, task and controls. It represents a modelled exposure, not a measurement taken at that workplace.

Identify the output being interpreted

The tool family includes prioritisation and quantitative estimation functions. GESTIS-Stoffenmanager, provided through IFA, expresses inhalation estimates as concentrations. A priority band and an estimated concentration are not interchangeable. Before comparing scenarios, check the module, version, units, represented duration and selected interpretation criterion. Additional decimal places do not make a model prediction equivalent to a direct measurement or increase the quality of the input evidence.

Inputs that justify observing the task

The description needs the product and its composition, its tendency to release dust or vapour, handling activity and worker proximity. Ventilation, containment and local controls also matter. Ticking a local-extraction option is insufficient unless it reflects observed operation. Occupational hygiene measurement and sampling can help resolve uncertainties that cannot be answered adequately through the input form alone, particularly where the real process varies.

Check the application domain first

The developer distinguishes applicable activities and physical forms. Handling a powder cannot automatically represent exposure to fibres or combustion products. Its documentation identifies gases, fibres and emissions such as welding fume or diesel exhaust as outside the described inhalation model. Any extension in a particular software version should be checked explicitly. The ability to enter a free-text description does not demonstrate that an activity has been validated.

A useful scenario comparison

For powder transfer, an assessor might compare the observed task with a proposed closed-transfer arrangement. The value lies in identifying which assumption explains the difference and whether that improvement is achievable. Substance and task descriptions must remain coherent. Changing concentration, duration and ventilation simultaneously without recording the reasons makes it difficult to identify which measure produces the predicted reduction and what must be checked during implementation.

Keep a traceable assessment

Retain product information, task observations, inputs, assumed controls and the complete output so another assessor can reconstruct the reasoning. High uncertainty, out-of-domain conditions or insufficiently controlled exposure call for reassessment and consideration of measurement. GESTIS references to German rules describe its regulatory context; they do not replace requirements elsewhere. The model supports professional judgement rather than automatically certifying compliance or confirming every worker’s actual exposure.

When information is missing, make its origin and uncertainty visible. For example, a property supplied for the pure substance may not describe a commercial mixture. Resolving that difference with the supplier is more useful than retaining a default value without explaining why it represents the product actually being handled at work.
