Trailer coupling and uncoupling safety

Trailer coupling combines the risks of vehicle movement, crushing between units and separation on the road. A coupling that appears closed does not by itself prove that the combination is ready to travel.

In brief

A configuration-specific method, immobilisation and verification prevent unexpected movement and detachment.

Use a method for the actual configuration

Fifth wheels, drawbars and close-coupled systems do not necessarily use the same sequence. The procedure must match the tractor, trailer and installed coupling. Changing vehicles requires familiarisation with controls, locks and connections even where a driver has considerable experience with other combinations.

Coupling selection and maintenance also matter. Wear, damage or incorrect adjustment can compromise the connection under normal road forces. Difficulty engaging a lock must not be solved by hitting components, fitting improvised parts or defeating the device that is preventing completion of the manoeuvre.

Prepare the location and control movement

The area needs ground capable of supporting vehicles and landing legs, adequate manoeuvring space and lighting for connection checks. Soft ground may fail beneath semitrailer supports. Trailer exchange should not force a person to work beside passing traffic.

Tractor and trailer immobilisation must follow the procedure before anyone enters the space between them. Loss of air pressure alone should not be treated as proof of secure parking. Coordination with Internal traffic in the workplace keeps other vehicles out of the working area while the task is taking place.

Verify the complete connection

Checks must establish correct seating, locking and the position of secondary devices, rather than relying only on a sound or an impression that engagement has occurred. Manufacturer-prescribed checks require a safe position; this article does not replace the operational sequence for the equipment.

Also inspect brake lines, electrical connections and components that could become stretched, pinched or dragged. Supports and accessories must be in their intended travelling condition. Load stability and distribution also influence the forces applied to the coupling while the vehicle is moving.

Record defects instead of departing under pressure

Pressure to clear a loading bay does not justify leaving before verification is complete. Identified defects must be communicated and resolved before an unsafe combination is used. Useful records connect the tractor, trailer, symptom and decision taken. Near misses involving detachment or trailer drop deserve investigation because they may reveal procedural, compatibility or maintenance problems that could recur during the next coupling operation.
