Controlling transmission
Isolation introduces elements that alter vibration transmission, such as mounts, suspension or seats, depending on the system. It does not mean eliminating the source or wrapping it in any flexible material. Effectiveness depends on the assembly’s response to the frequencies present. It is an engineering measure within mechanical vibration control.
Frequency and load matter
An isolating element has intended operating conditions. Changing the supported mass, compressing it excessively or installing it differently can alter its response. Under certain conditions, amplification occurs instead of reduction. Selection therefore requires equipment and installation data, not simply comparison of material thickness or perceived softness.
Vehicle seats
The seat must suit the vehicle, route and user. Adjustments, suspension and maintenance affect transmission to the body. A damaged or incorrectly adjusted seat may lose effectiveness. Procurement should include understandable instructions and verification of actual use; installing a new component does not itself demonstrate improved exposure.
Machinery and structures
For fixed equipment, examine supports, foundations and connections that may create alternative transmission paths. A rigid pipe or additional anchor may bypass the intended isolation. Modifications must preserve machine stability, alignment and safety. Do not remove necessary fixings or install improvised supports to reduce an observed vibration.
Before-and-after verification
In a hypothetical example, isolating mounts are fitted to a platform. Verification compares equivalent loading and operating conditions and includes the locations occupied by people. If casing vibration decreases but vibration at the workstation increases, the preventive objective has not been met. The report must record configuration, measurements and comparison limitations.
Combining controls
Isolation is often accompanied by maintenance, balancing, ground improvement or process substitution. It does not automatically resolve extreme shocks or poor posture. Check component condition periodically and after major changes. Gloves or padding should not be treated as a universal solution without evidence of effectiveness for the specific task.
