Scope and limitations
The 2018 BIOGAVAL-NEO manual describes its purpose as a practical instrument for technical personnel. It helps structure assessment and prioritise controls in activities involving exposure to biological agents.
It must not be presented as a universal method for every form of biological harm. The manual excludes assessment of allergic and toxic effects and states that particularly susceptible people require specific study. These limits must be checked before calculation begins.
Determine jobs and agents
Application starts with understanding tasks, surroundings, processes, equipment and materials. Grouped jobs must have sufficiently homogeneous exposure conditions and consequences. Mobile tasks or work across different areas need specific attention.
The manual’s indicative agent list must not be copied automatically. Adapt it to the job and current data. A sector label does not establish that every commonly associated agent is present or that no additional agent exists.
Information the method requires
BIOGAVAL-NEO considers agent group, transmission route, likelihood of contact, vaccination, frequency of risk tasks and hygiene measures adopted. Each variable needs justification and the scale from the edition used.
Measures are checked through observation and work information. A written procedure does not by itself demonstrate implementation. Occupational vaccination data must be handled under the relevant healthcare and confidentiality criteria.
Interpret results without mixing versions
The NEO edition changes variables, the equation and levels compared with earlier editions. Combining one version’s formula with another’s scores or criteria undermines the procedure’s coherence.
The biological action level and biological exposure limit are internal method references guiding decisions. They are not a measured microorganism concentration or a universal environmental limit. Their meaning must be read in the complete manual.
Situations needing additional attention
The manual distinguishes full application from a simplified approach based on sentinel microorganisms. The latter requires thorough knowledge of the activity and justification that the organisms adequately represent exposure; it must not be chosen solely to save time.
Particularly susceptible people require specific assessment. Analysis must also be reviewed when tasks, plausible agents, epidemiological information or measures change. A previous result does not automatically describe a new situation.
Hypothetical example: cleaning in a healthcare centre
A prevention team observes cleaning tasks, identifies possible contacts and checks relevant agents against current information. It documents the data and verifies how measures are applied rather than merely filling out a table for each occupational category.
The result guides actions and follow-up. Individual healthcare matters are addressed through appropriate health surveillance; they are not inferred from a collective score or turned into diagnoses in the preventive report.
