Identify the material and compound
INFOCARQUIM identifies metallic cadmium by CAS 7440-43-9 and lists the non-pyrophoric form as a category 1B carcinogen. Cadmium compounds must be identified separately.
Parts, coatings and waste may require information beyond appearance. The trade name or previous use of a material is insufficient to exclude cadmium.
Recognise emitting operations
The INSST cadmium information sheet describes applications in batteries, alloys and surface treatments. Relevant workplace routes include inhalation of dust or fumes and accidental ingestion associated with inadequate hygiene.
Review what happens when material is transformed, as well as its storage. Receipt, sorting, maintenance and cleaning may affect people other than the main operator.
Consider cumulative effects
INSST explains that cadmium can remain in the body for a long time and particularly affect the kidneys, alongside respiratory effects and other harm. Absence of discomfort during a working day does not establish that risk is controlled.
This reinforces the need to preserve exposure information and provide specific health surveillance without waiting for symptoms to appear.
Apply the hierarchy of controls
In Spain, Royal Decree 665/1997 requires considering substitution of carcinogenic agents where technically possible. Where it is not possible, the regulation’s closed-system and exposure-reduction measures apply.
Capture must address emissions from the specific task. Respiratory protection does not automatically replace a feasible engineering control or resolve contamination of clothing, tools and surfaces.
Measure the appropriate fraction and agent
Sampling must correspond to the exposure form and applicable reference value. The INSST LEP database and current legislation allow checking of fractions, notes and limit conditions.
Measuring nonspecific dust is not equivalent to determining cadmium. The laboratory and practitioner must agree what will be quantified and how it will be interpreted, including short tasks and process variation.
Prevent secondary dispersal
Cleaning, clothing management and waste handling must prevent contamination reaching clean areas or leaving the site. Suitable methods are needed, avoiding practices that resuspend dust.
Biological indicators, where appropriate, form part of health surveillance with professional, confidential interpretation. Their results cannot by themselves establish a cause or remove the need for environmental measurements.
Hypothetical example: battery recovery
A company separates batteries of different technologies. It confirms that one batch contains nickel-cadmium and reviews handling and treatment rather than assume all batteries present the same hazards.
Assessment identifies emitting operations, nearby workers and waste. Controls are adjusted and their effectiveness checked before the process is expanded.
