What ElevenLabs is
ElevenLabs develops AI audio models and applications. Its offering is organised around ElevenCreative for production, ElevenAgents for conversation and ElevenAPI for integration. Text to speech, transcription and dubbing solve different problems, even when used in the same production.
Narration starts with a script; transcription starts with a recording; an agent responds during an interaction. This determines what needs approval: wording and pronunciation, fidelity to the original, or behaviour when questioned. For an organisation, choosing the appropriate workflow matters as much as selecting a pleasant voice.

Origins and development
Piotr Dąbkowski and Mati Staniszewski founded the company in 2022. In an interview, they described monotonous film voiceovers heard in Poland as an inspiration. The public beta was announced in January 2023. Dubbing Studio and a marketplace of verified voices expanded the offering in 2024.
Development continued into music, transcription and agents. In February 2026 it announced a $500 million Sequoia-led round at an $11 billion valuation. A September employee liquidity transaction valued it at $22 billion. These are different transactions; the latter does not amount to a stock-market listing. This evolution explains why early guides to a voice generator cover only part of today’s platform.

Speech models and performance direction
Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo launched on 28 September 2026. v4 supports expressive direction and dialogue between speakers; Turbo targets lower latency. The family covers more than 90 languages, including Spanish, Catalan and English. These capabilities should not be assumed for earlier models.
A script also directs performance. A pause can separate actions, and emphasis can change what sounds most important. Test sentences containing conditions, negatives and lists. For technical narration, a stable delivery is often more useful than demonstrating every available emotion. In conversation, assess whether latency and turn-taking allow a person to finish a question without interruption, alongside sound quality.

Voice Library and continuity
Voice Library supports searches by language, accent and use. Some voices include notice periods if their owner stops sharing them; others may disappear immediately. Saving a voice does not by itself secure its future availability.
For a training series, retain its identifier, an approved sample and an alternative. The main voice should pronounce organisational vocabulary well across several examples. If a voice changes between chapters, decide whether to retain older material or reproduce the series. This is a maintenance and consistency decision as well as an aesthetic preference.

Instant and professional cloning
Instant Voice Cloning uses short authorised samples. Professional Voice Cloning requires more material, verification of the user’s own voice and dedicated fine-tuning; its guide excludes singing. These are different procedures.
Before creating a corporate voice, define whom it represents, which messages it may read and who administers its use. A meeting recording includes interruptions and other speakers; a planned session provides more controlled references. Separate permission to record from permission to generate new sentences. If the person leaves the organisation, decide how to handle continuity, withdrawal and updates so a familiar voice does not imply personal approval that was never given.

Studio, audiobooks and export
Studio combines narration and timeline editing. Chapters or full projects can be exported as MP3 and WAV, with quality depending on plan. On lower tiers, a WAV may originate from compressed audio; higher tiers offer a higher-quality source.
The filename extension alone does not establish fidelity. Organise a long guide into units that can be corrected independently: welcome, orientation, communication and resources. Align titles and versions with the written document. Listen across joins after changing a paragraph: two individually acceptable takes may create a jump in volume or rhythm. Deliver chapters and a complete version when both suit the intended use.

Dubbing and translation control
Dubbing Studio supports revision of transcription, translation and timing. Alongside AAC, MP3 and WAV, it exports tracks, AAF timeline data, SRT subtitles and CSV containing speakers and text. This supports further review or editing outside the platform.
Dubbing needs separate meaning and synchronisation checks. A correct translation may finish after the image has moved to another object. For an explanatory video, identify each visible action and the passage describing it. Adjust wording without removing important conditions. Prepare language-specific equivalents for local abbreviations before regeneration; preserving voice identity does not resolve terminology.

Scribe: transcription and fidelity
Scribe v2 provides transcription with timestamps and speaker separation; Realtime and Medical variants also exist. It supports reference terms and options to remove disfluencies or edit transcripts. Spanish, Catalan and English are supported.
Decide whether the requirement is readable text or a faithful representation of speech. In an incident interview, hesitation may express uncertainty; removing it changes how the account reads. Retain the recording and distinguish the original transcript from an edited version. A speaker label separates voices but does not establish a person’s identity. Check names, units and negated statements against the recording.

Music, effects and audio cleanup
Eleven Music generates compositions using prompts, lyrics, references and section editing. Music v2.5 arrived in September 2026. Voice Isolator processes existing recordings to separate speech from noise; generating a sound effect is different from cleaning a recording.
Music rights depend on product and plan: ElevenMusic has its own conditions and should not be confused with Creative subscriptions. Music terms restrict artist references and certain distribution uses. For educational material, first decide whether music helps. Where a real signal must be heard, a soundtrack can mask the relevant information. Retain a voice-only mix to compare intelligibility.

Conversational agents and integration
ElevenAgents combines voice, instructions, knowledge bases and connected tools. It includes testing, simulations and conversation logs, with API and SDK integration. The model generating a response and the voice speaking it are separate components.
A proposed use is helping someone locate an approved guide. Define the sources and allow the agent to acknowledge unavailable answers. Test incomplete questions, interruptions, language switching and requests outside scope. In OSH, a convincing voice does not turn an information agent into an emergency service or a fitness-for-work decision-maker. Human handover belongs in the design, rather than being added after a failure.

Flows, images and video
Flows, documented as Alpha, organises production through nodes and supports repeating individual stages. Studio focuses on a timeline. The platform also integrates external image and video models, with references and controls depending on the selected model.
A workflow may combine a script, narration and illustrative imagery. Retain the relationship between each stage’s input and output: if wording about an object changes, review its visual too. Automation reduces repetitive operations but magnifies a mistaken input when executed repeatedly. Start with one production and check what updates before generating campaign-wide variants.

ElevenReader and personal listening
ElevenReader is intended for personal listening and reading. Its documentation states that audio cannot be exported or commercially distributed from the application. File production uses the appropriate tools on the web platform.
This affects product selection. Listening to a document before a meeting differs from producing a resource for an entire workforce. The latter requires an approved file, suitable rights and an accessible written version. A listening subscription should not be assumed to grant production-studio functionality or permissions.

Plans, data and administration
Creative offers Free, Starter, Creator, Pro, Scale, Business and Enterprise. Professional cloning starts at Creator, with commercial licensing listed from Starter. The privacy policy allows users to opt out of personal-data training through settings; this applies prospectively. Business contracts have their own scope.
Compare costs using revisions and versions, not just final minutes. Test representative vocabulary and record the work needed for approval. Before uploading recordings, remove names or conversations irrelevant to the production. A voice template does not need individual case records. Review team permissions and sample retention alongside the applicable product and regional terms.

Audio detection and provenance
Audio Detector searches for ElevenLabs watermarks and falls back to a statistical classifier when none are found. It does not universally identify other providers’ audio. The classifier may produce false positives or miss modified material.
A positive result concerns possible provenance, not the truth of the words. A negative result does not authenticate the apparent speaker. For significant internal communication, verify authorship and approval through the usual channel. Retain the editorially approved script, generated version and distribution context; this traceability answers questions an audio detector cannot resolve.

Reception and controversies
Engadget documented impersonation in 2023. In January 2024, WIRED reported expert analyses attributing a fake Biden robocall probably to ElevenLabs. This was an expert assessment, not a judicial finding.
These episodes illustrate why a familiar voice is not an authentication mechanism. In training or corporate communication, identify synthetic narration and avoid presenting generated sentences as a person’s spontaneous statements. Clear authorisation and identifiable distribution help distinguish legitimate production from audio circulating out of context.

Voice access and cultural projects
The Impact Program works with organisations supporting people with voice loss and provides tools to preserve or recreate their voices. Its one-million-person target is a commitment, not an already achieved result. The 2026 documentary series 11 Voices presents experiences of people with permanent voice loss.
The Eleven Album, introduced in January 2026, involved artists incorporating Eleven Music into varied creative processes. These represent different purposes: personal participation in communication and artistic experimentation. They illustrate uses beyond advertising, automatic narration and customer service.

Practical applications in OSH
In occupational safety and health, it can support narrated versions of reviewed content, induction materials and resources that complement reading. Its potential value is providing another way to access a message, without assuming that listening replaces understanding or practical training when a task requires it. Accessibility should be checked with the intended audience.
Besides an induction guide, proposed uses include a short audio recap before a meeting or narration explaining a form. The value lies in keeping spoken and written instructions aligned. A calm delivery may support listening, but it must not make a conditional recommendation sound like an unconditional command.
Worked example and result checks
Example: produce narration for a short incident reporting guide. The team uses the approved text, listens to the complete output and checks pronunciation of abbreviations, numbers and contact details before pairing the audio with an accessible transcript.
To develop this example, split the script into three blocks: what to report, where to report it and which details to include. Write acronyms as they should be pronounced and explain internal names on first mention. Generate a short passage containing the hardest words before producing the entire recording.
A reviewer compares every sentence with the approved text, especially negatives, telephone extensions and department names. Someone unfamiliar with the project then listens without the script and explains which channel they would use. If their answer is ambiguous, revise the text and regenerate it. Keep the script, final audio and language version together so a change of reporting channel triggers a coordinated update.
Limitations and conditions of use
Synthetic speech may mispronounce technical terms, lose nuances or place inappropriate emphasis on a warning. Review every output and retain the reference text. Voice cloning requires authorisation; avoid making narration sound like an authentic personal communication from someone who did not issue it.
Voice-sample quality affects cloning: noise, changes of delivery or multiple speakers can influence the result. Documentation distinguishes downloading generated audio from exporting a voice model: the clone is not downloadable as a standalone file. Check the plan’s usage rights before distributing corporate narration; access to a free sample does not establish permission for every commercial use.

When to choose it and how to complement it
Choose ElevenLabs when narration must be produced or updated from text and each language can be reviewed. An existing recorded interview that needs shortening poses a different problem, addressed by Descript through editing existing material. CapCut can combine the voice with images and appropriate reading times.
A useful comparison includes an acronym, a number and a long sentence from the actual script. Assess intelligibility, ease of correcting one passage, usage rights and version maintenance as well as voice quality. Test the exported recording on the device people will actually use, rather than judging only a studio preview.
Frequently asked questions
Does a natural voice guarantee an accurate message?
No. Fluency describes how the audio sounds. Accuracy depends on the script, actual pronunciation and whether the listener understands the intended action.
Should a manager’s voice be cloned?
Only with permission and a clear purpose. A library voice can avoid attributing a personal statement to someone. If a clone is used, identify the narration as synthetic and establish who can generate further pieces.
Is keeping the MP3 enough?
Keep the approved text and version details too. Audio alone makes it harder to review changed contacts or prepare another language version with the same meaning.
