What Scite is and what it analyzes
Scite is a scientific literature discovery and evaluation platform from Research Solutions. Its distinguishing feature is Smart Citations: these show the context in which a publication is cited and classify the relationship expressed in that passage. It also provides search and an assistant for working with research.
It is particularly useful when an important reference is already known and the question is what happened afterwards: who used it, what was challenged and which part of the argument received support. This perspective complements reading the original study. A paper may be influential because it introduced a method, prompted debate or produced a result that others tried to reproduce; a total count does not distinguish those situations.

Origins, ownership and development
The idea of classifying citations emerged in a 2014 proposal about reproducibility. Scite was established in 2018. In a June 2019 interview, Josh Nicholson described his work with cofounder Yuri Lazebnik and confirmed that the platform was already publicly available.
Research Solutions announced the acquisition in November 2023; its annual report records the purchase of 100% of Scite on December 1 that year. The announcement and the date recorded in the financial documentation are therefore distinguished.
Assistant added a conversational layer in 2023. The April 2024 update made search strategy and each response’s references more visible. June 2025 brought rankings incorporating Smart Citation information, followed by direct reference exports in October. MCP launched on February 26, 2026, extending access to compatible AI clients. These developments broaden how the index can be used without making it an infallible assessment of research.

Citations, statements and papers: three different units
A traditional citation connects one publication to another. A citation statement is the passage in which that reference occurs. One paper can cite another several times, so the number of statements is not the number of independent publications.
This distinction matters when interpreting results. If a review mentions the same trial five times, five new checks of its effectiveness have not occurred. Nor do five documents guarantee five independent samples: participants or data may be reused. A synthesis should retain paper identifiers and, where possible, study identifiers.
The useful question is not simply “how much support does it have?” but “which claim received support and how many distinct investigations provided it?” The index then becomes a guide to reading relationships between studies rather than an automatic credibility score.

What supporting, contrasting and mentioning mean
The deep-learning classifier distinguishes rhetorical function rather than positive or negative tone. Supporting and Contrasting concern evidence presented in relation to the cited work; Mentioning covers references without that support or contrast. A supporting classification does not require the original experiment to be repeated exactly.
For example, a paper on work organization might cite another for its survey method, a finding or simply background. These are different uses. An apparently favorable sentence may merely repeat an earlier conclusion, while disagreement may concern only a secondary measure.
Reading the context should identify the exact object of comparison. In OSH, it matters whether the discussion concerns exposure, symptoms, behavior, performance or incidents. A general label should not be transferred to every finding in the paper, nor should a methodological mention become confirmation of preventive effectiveness.

Search and publication reports
Citation Statement Search locates terms within citation passages. A publication’s report brings together the citations it receives, with filters for category, year, section or document type. Users can then explore the citing papers.
Searching passages helps when a concept appears in a discussion but not a title. However, finding a word in a citation context does not establish that the paper directly studied that concept. Open the citing document and check the reference’s role.
A practical strategy is to start with a known DOI, examine recent citations and review contrasting as well as supporting material. Filtering only for favorable evidence would bias the map. Results without a striking category may still contain essential clarifications about populations, measures or conditions of application.

Assistant and Table Mode
Assistant generates literature-grounded answers. Table Mode organizes results by source and supports custom columns for exploring each study further. A tabular output allows attributes to be compared without immediately merging them into one narrative.
For workplace studies, suggested columns might include task, population, design, exposure, measured variable and limitation. Each cell should retain its status as an extraction awaiting verification. A missing value is not zero, and the authors’ description is not an independent appraisal.
The table may also reveal that a question should be split. If some sources examine perceived comfort and others operational errors, a single synthesis about “ergonomic improvement” would conceal incompatible outcomes. Organize those differences first, then write a conclusion within the scope they actually support.

Reference Check and editorial notices
Reference Check takes a PDF and analyzes the references it uses, including editorial notices. A Scite report looks at citations received by a paper; Reference Check examines references going out from the supplied document. Extraction may miss items depending on formatting or identifiers.
A notice requires reading the editorial communication: a correction, an expression of concern and a retraction are not interchangeable. It also matters whether the issue affects the claim being used. The tool helps detect a signal but does not independently determine which sentence should change.
Scite explains that a retracted paper may have no passages classified as contrasting. An absence of contrast therefore cannot rule out editorial problems. Check both routes and record what was examined, when and which document prompted the decision.

Collections, monitoring and metrics
Collections organize papers and provide alerts about new citations or retractions. Scite also offers aggregate metrics and rankings incorporating Smart Citation information for entities such as journals and institutions.
For a team, a collection could represent the current references in training material. Its value lies in reviewing developments relevant to the claims being taught, rather than reacting to every increase in a counter. An alert should lead to reading and a documented decision.
Rankings reflect their construction method and available information. They cannot automatically select the best study for a particular task or assess an individual’s competence. A highly ranked institution may produce very different papers; article-level appraisal remains necessary.

Coverage, full text and missing material
The coverage page distinguishes indexed articles, full-text sources and extracted statements. When checked in November 2026 it reported more than 323 million, 50 million and 1.7 billion respectively. These are provider figures describing different categories.
The documentation attributes missing citations to unprocessed publications, extraction failures, absent publisher agreements or incorrect metadata. An empty result therefore does not establish that a paper has never been challenged.
For an important review, check a set of known references and record gaps. If one field has less coverage, comparing its counts with another may create an apparent quality difference. The platform’s access to material for indexing also does not give the user a license to download or redistribute all content.

Browser extension, MCP and API
The extension brings citation signals into the browser. MCP enables authenticated access to Scite from compatible AI clients; the API returns structured data for custom applications. Some plans include additional sources such as patents, clinical trials and grants.
These routes address different needs: reading with context, researching within an assistant or integrating information into a process. Provenance should be preserved when moving results between them. An answer reformulated by a second model still needs a link to the original publication and passage.
In automation, separate retrieval from subsequent actions. Finding a reference can populate a review list; it should not turn a provisional conclusion into an automatic change to a guideline. When combining papers with other record types, identify each item’s origin rather than treating them as equivalent evidence.

Access options and selection
The offering reviewed distinguishes Basic, Pro and Enterprise, with different MCP quotas, API access, collection sizes and datasets. The stated trial lasts seven days and converts to the selected plan unless canceled. Institutional conditions may differ.
Choosing a plan requires estimating the work: how many references will be reviewed, whether API access is needed and how many people will share the process. A team updating a few guides has different needs from one integrating bibliographic queries into an application.
The budget should also allow for access to necessary papers and review time. Being able to inspect a reference does not guarantee access to its entire document. In multilingual work, keeping the original passage alongside its translation helps check negations and methodological nuances.

Institutional use and evaluation criteria
HKUST reported 52 users who had tried Scite MCP by September 21, 2026. The University of Southern Denmark guide highlights citation context and tables while noting coverage limitations and local data conditions. These are institutional examples, not tests of universal accuracy.
A useful evaluation distinguishes extraction, classification and synthesis. A passage may be correctly located but misclassified; a reasonable classification may also be followed by an overly broad explanation. Identifying the stage at which a problem occurs helps determine which work needs review.
Sabentis proposes testing known references involving support, controversy and editorial notices, comparing each result with the original. Such a test should document omissions and false contrasts. It was not performed for this profile, and no unmeasured accuracy rate is attributed to the product.

Data handling and manuscripts
The March 2026 policy describes collection of account, usage and device data, service providers and cookies, and processing in the United States. For Reference Check, the help documentation distinguishes deletion of the PDF after report generation from retention of the report’s extracted data.
Before uploading an internal manuscript, check whether its passages contain confidential or identifiable information. Deleting the file does not necessarily delete every derived item. Public literature searching can usually proceed without worker names or incident details.
When connecting Scite to another assistant, also consider that service’s conditions and workspace permissions. Authorization to consult a library should not be confused with authorization to share internal documents or redistribute publications. This profile does not certify a particular organizational configuration.

Applications in occupational safety and health
In occupational safety and health, it can help examine a reference used in guidance, a report or an intervention proposal. The question is not simply how often a study is cited, but how it is interpreted and whether subsequent research challenges any of its conclusions. This can improve the transparency of a literature review.
It can support the review of an internal guide that retains older references, or help check whether a claim repeated in training still represents the literature appropriately. It can also locate methodological discussions about questionnaires or instruments used in occupational research. These are scenarios proposed by Sabentis: the tool supplies reading leads, while technical appraisal remains with the people examining the studies.
Another application is checking inherited claims in presentations: record the exact sentence, locate the primary source and examine whether later citations address that same sentence. The literature may support a limited association while the material presents it as a general effect. The editorial improvement is to adjust scope and wording, not accumulate more references.

Hypothetical case: reviewing an ergonomics reference
In this hypothetical case proposed by Sabentis, a team reviews a highly cited paper about an ergonomic intervention. It locates later studies, reads their citing passages and checks whether they concern the same outcome before retaining the reference in training material.
- Identify the ergonomic-intervention paper by DOI and verify its title, authors and date.
- Review passages classified as supporting, contrasting and mentioning, including findings that do not confirm the initial interpretation.
- Check the specific claim each paper cites: effectiveness, measurement method, context or background.
- Open later papers and compare population, intervention and follow-up; design differences may explain apparent contradictions.
- Update the training bibliography note and retain a justification for any change.
The output is a reasoned map of the reference: what remains supported, what is disputed and what could not be checked. A retraction notice requires reviewing its reason and relationship to the claim being used. Likewise, a correction of details should not automatically be described as invalidating the entire study.
In an internal bibliographic audit, recording the DOI, reviewed claim, citation passage and editorial decision creates a checkable chain. A guide need not change for every new paper: identify developments that materially affect its content and explain when the evidence remains insufficient.

Limits of interpretation
Automated citation classification is not a complete assessment of study quality. A paper may support one finding and challenge another. Read the context, identify the precise outcome and appraise the relevant methods.
Automated classification operates on accessible contexts, rather than all possible evidence. A passage may describe a difference without refuting the main conclusion. The absence of contrasting citations does not establish that a finding is robust. Record the consultation date and retain the original reference because the body of publications and notices can change over time.

When to choose it and what can complement it
Choose Scite when the question is “How has this reference been used or challenged?” Consensus complements exploration of a broad question, and SciSpace can assist with reading complex papers. Combining them is useful when each serves a defined purpose, with a single source register to avoid counting the same study twice.

Frequently asked questions
Does a supporting citation prove a study is correct?
No. It describes the relationship between a passage and a reference; it does not replace assessment of methods, data and bias.
Do many contrasting citations mean I should remove the reference?
Not automatically. Establish which finding is disputed and whether it affects the claim being used.
Can it help review published materials?
Yes, by helping locate later literature and editorial notices. Record the search date and review original sources before changing the material.
