What QuillBot is

QuillBot is a platform for writing assistance and content creation. Its best-known tool, Paraphraser, proposes alternative wording for existing text. Its current portfolio also includes grammar checking, summarisation, translation, citations, detection and generation resources. Its usefulness depends on choosing the right operation for each stage of work.

Rewording and substantiating are different tasks. New wording may be clearer, but it does not itself supply new facts or make a claim true. For professional documents, start with substantiated content and use the tool to explore how to communicate it.

History, founders and ownership

The project began in 2017 with Anil Jason, Rohan Gupta and David Silin, associated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The university documents its origins and acquisition by Course Hero in 2021. The corporate history places participation in iVenture in 2018 and the first million users in 2019.

In April 2020 QuillBot announced over $4 million in seed funding, led by GSV Ventures and Sierra Ventures, with participation from Service Provider Capital. Its stated goal was to expand a platform that had begun with paraphrasing.

The brand became part of the group now called Learneo. Its current website identifies Andrew Grauer as CEO; historical biographies assigning that role to Rohan Gupta require their time context. The portfolio has extended into images, audio, search and design alongside writing.

Acquisition dates and the parent company’s history should not be confused with individual product histories. Funding figures or controversies involving other group services should not automatically be attributed to QuillBot.

How rewording works

QuillBot applies language processing to produce alternative versions of content. Results can be compared with the original and generated again. This transforms expression, but preserving meaning remains something to check in each output, especially where numbers, negations or conditions appear.

A technical case study published with Google Cloud in 2021 described training and inference using GPUs, virtual machines and Kubernetes. It provides evidence of infrastructure at that time; it does not disclose every current model or establish identical processing conditions across modules.

Examine a paraphrase at four levels: substituted words, sentence structure, relationships between ideas and the scope of the claim. Replacing “some” with “all” may look like a small edit while completely changing the conclusion. Useful comparison goes beyond the percentage of different words.

Modes, synonyms and protected terms

Modes guide rewriting towards goals such as fluency, formality or simplicity. The synonym control determines how many words are replaced; the help documentation warns that a higher setting may change meaning. Availability varies by mode and offering.

Freeze Words preserves words or phrases in Premium, but is unavailable in some modes. It can help with equipment names, codes or agreed terminology. Protecting a term does not guarantee that its surrounding sentence preserves the original relationship between subject, action and condition.

For a professional trial, prepare one short list of fixed elements and another of editable aspects. Changing the order of an explanation may be acceptable while an equipment code must remain verbatim. Comparing two versions is usually more useful than generating numerous alternatives without selection criteria.

Summarising and organising content

Summarizer condenses a document into paragraphs or bullet points and allows length adjustments; custom options depend on the offering. This differs from paraphrasing because it selects what information to retain as well as changing wording.

First define the summary’s function. An introduction orients readers; a decision brief must preserve criteria and alternatives; a reminder may cover previously understood actions. Confusing these purposes can produce pleasant reading that does not support the intended decision.

Sabentis proposes checking summaries against essential elements: purpose, scope, owners, conditions and the full reference. Where a condition will not fit, include a clear pointer to the original document. A summary should make detail accessible, rather than obscure its existence.

Languages: check each module

Paraphraser help lists Spanish and English, but not Catalan. Coverage differs across modules. The current Translate page advertises over fifty languages and Plagiarism Checker over one hundred; some general help lists are more restrictive. For a specific task, check the relevant function and its current selector.

For multilingual content, decide whether to reword within one language or translate into another. Chaining both operations can accumulate meaning changes. Keeping the approved version as a common reference helps reveal divergence across three versions and prevents a translated rewrite from becoming an independent source.

Citations, similarity and authorship

Citation Generator formats references in styles including APA, MLA and Chicago. Correct formatting differs from verifying that a document exists, has been read and supports a claim. Check the author, title, date, link and relationship to the cited passage.

Plagiarism Checker looks for similarities; AI Detector estimates signs of generation. The provider itself says a detector score should not be the sole basis of an academic or employment decision. Neither result verifies factual accuracy.

In an OSH report, a useful editorial practice links each significant fact to its source and preserves the version consulted. Paraphrasing another author’s idea still requires attribution. Rewording to change a score does not improve the evidence or repair a missing reference.

Presentations and creation beyond text

The portfolio includes chat, images and design tools. AI Presentation Maker, labelled beta in navigation, can start from a prompt, outline or document and export PPTX or PDF. Editable output allows review to continue in a presentation application.

One practical approach is to turn an approved outline into an initial slide structure, then review hierarchy, text size, contrast and the relationship between images and messages. Automatically creating the medium does not decide content priorities or establish that an image accurately represents a workplace situation.

For reuse, keep the editable file, sources and review date. Well-organised material allows a fact to be updated without rebuilding every asset and helps maintain consistency between the full text, presentation and downloadable resource.

Access, plans and integrations

The platform offers free, Premium and team plans. Text limits, modes and advanced options differ; for example, the reviewed page limits free paraphrasing to 125 words per input. Extensions and applications broaden access points without guaranteeing identical capabilities in every environment.

Help published in June 2026 states that QuillBot offers neither a B2B nor B2C API. A browser extension is not an authorised API for automating a system. Before designing an integration, check current documentation and contracted capabilities.

To choose an offering, test the same texts and measure review time, accepted changes and introduced errors. Value lies in completing work to a suitable standard, rather than maximising the number of rewrites. Teams also need shared approval criteria and a configuration owner.

Data, privacy and settings

Help explains that inputs and usage data may be used to provide, personalise and improve the service. It describes storage and training controls in supported extensions and excludes Team Plan text from training. Check the account and active controls; conditions differ across offerings.

The provider states that connections are encrypted and data is not sold. These statements do not replace reviewing what information is entered, who accesses it and how long each product retains it.

For an internal campaign, begin with publishable or effectively anonymised texts. In a report about people, removing names may be insufficient if role, date and site identify them. Permission to edit a text should not be confused with permission to upload every accompanying document.

Research and evaluation of results

A 2024 study by Gürbüz involving 48 English learners in Turkey, selected through convenience sampling, found favourable results in the group using QuillBot. Its quasi-experimental design and educational context limit its scope; it does not establish universal effectiveness or OSH-specific outcomes.

In 2025 Leong compared fifty Nature abstracts with rewrites from QuillBot, Jasper and Copilot. QuillBot most closely matched the corpus’s grammatical structure in the analysed categories. Measuring structural similarity does not verify every claim’s scientific accuracy.

An internal evaluation can record three outcomes: improvements in expression, neutral modifications and meaning changes. Give greater weight to a removed negation or lost condition than to several successful synonyms. Also measure total time, including human review, and the ease of preserving references.

Applications in occupational safety and health

It can help adapt awareness materials into simpler language and prepare shorter versions of lengthy documents. In occupational safety, adaptation must retain the conditions of application and essential instructions. Simplification should not remove information needed to perform a task safely, particularly warnings, exceptions and the sequence of required actions.

One application is preparing two reading levels for a safety explanation: a short presentation version and a detailed reference version. Another is reducing repetition in a campaign draft while retaining its references. It can also help compare wording for a comprehension question, although the correct answer and explanation must come from approved material. These are applications proposed by Sabentis, rather than technical validation functions of the product.

Worked example and checks

For example, a practitioner takes an approved fall-prevention text and requests a brief toolbox talk version. They compare it with the original, retain the specific measures and reject wording that replaces a checkable instruction with advice too general to guide a worker.

  1. Select the approved fall-prevention text and mark measures, conditions and terms that must remain.
  2. Request a reformulation in a supported language and module, specifying the audience and desired length.
  3. Review highlighted changes and compare each sentence with the original.
  4. Check that a specific statement has not become “act carefully” or another recommendation without a verifiable action.
  5. Prepare the talk and retain a link to the complete material for conditions that a short version cannot develop.

A useful quality check is reconstructing who does what and under which circumstances from the summary. If an instruction depends on an omitted condition, the reduction is unacceptable. There is no need to reword a sentence merely to make it different: consistent repetition of a technical term may be preferable to several imprecise synonyms. Preserve the original alongside the edited version so another reviewer can check these decisions.

Limitations and conditions of use

Paraphrasing can change meaning, introduce ambiguity or detach a claim from its reference. Preserve sources and review citations. AI text detection tools should not be treated as conclusive evidence of authorship or misconduct.

The intention to preserve meaning does not guarantee that every paraphrase does so. Changes to subjects, quantifiers or modality can alter an obligation. Summaries may lose important limitations. Rewording another person’s idea also does not remove the need for attribution; retaining its reference prevents presenting someone else’s result as an original contribution.

Choosing and complementing the tool

Choose QuillBot when exploring alternative wording for content that already has a sound basis. DeepL complements a translation and terminology workflow; Microsoft Word supports tracking changes and approving the final version. For Catalan content, check the specific function before using it: one module’s language support cannot be inferred from another’s.

Before extending use to a team, trial paragraphs containing numbers, negatives and specialist vocabulary. Recording rejected suggestions helps define editing criteria instead of judging the tool solely by how fluent its output sounds.

Frequently asked questions

Does paraphrasing remove the need to cite?

No. Attribution depends on the origin of the idea, rather than retaining exactly the same words.

Can I use every module in Catalan?

This is not asserted here. The reviewed documentation differentiates languages by function and does not list Catalan for the Paraphraser.

Is a shorter version always clearer?

No. It may omit essential conditions. Check clarity against the purpose and full content of the message.
