What Recraft and Recraft Studio are
Recraft develops visual generation models and provides Recraft Studio, a workspace for creating and editing images, vectors, mockups and other assets. Studio combines proprietary and external models. The platform focuses on graphic design and collections requiring a consistent appearance.
Its most practical distinction is combining generation with vector-asset editing. A drawing can be reviewed as a collection of shapes and reused in an interface, document or printed item. Work does not end with an attractive image: the team needs to decide which parts must remain editable, the intended display size and who will maintain the asset. This profile describes the offering checked on 8 November 2026. Some older guides show controls now located in a different interface, so the workflow and selected model both matter.

Origins, company and development
Recraft was founded in the United States in 2022 and identifies London as its headquarters. Anna Veronika Dorogush is its founder. Early development focused on graphic creation tools and proprietary models; V2 and V3 preceded the current family. In May 2025 it announced a $30 million round led by Accel.
V4 appeared on 17 February 2026 with image and vector variants; V4.1 followed on 14 May. This development shows two parallel directions: improving models and expanding the environment where their outputs can be corrected and reused. A historical comparison of generators therefore does not describe all of Studio. Positions achieved in visual-preference comparisons at earlier stages also do not replace evaluation of the current model using the project’s own material and requirements.

Proprietary models and documented technology
Nebius documented the training from scratch of a historical Recraft model with 20 billion parameters and distributed GPU infrastructure. That figure describes a particular stage, not the confirmed size of every later model. The current public offering provides access through Studio and the API.
For users, the important distinction is between generating pixels and producing vector geometry. One yields an image; the other yields shapes that can be edited individually. Commercial documentation does not establish the complete architecture or training collection of every version. Evaluation therefore means checking outputs and available controls: consistency across a series, correction effort and the delivered file’s quality. Parameter count alone cannot answer these questions. A technically impressive model may still require considerable manual work for a narrowly specified graphic.

V4.1, Utility, Vector and Flash
The V4.1 family includes image and vector variants, with higher-resolution Pro options. Utility targets simpler, front-facing compositions. Flash, released in September 2026, prioritises speed and volume; its API produces raster images and does not support styles. Choosing Flash is not the same as switching any model into a faster mode.
Decide the delivery format before selecting a model. For an icon that will be adjusted through curves, choose a vector route; for photographic exploration, a raster variant may fit. A selection trial should include a simple and a demanding brief: a clear silhouette and a composition containing several elements. Compare correction time as well as generation. A fast variant can support exploration and another can support finishing, provided the switch preserves the approved creative direction.

Styles, references and palettes
V4 Styles defines an appearance from one to ten references without training a custom model. Studio distinguishes this workflow from legacy V2 and V3 styles, which have different controls and reference limits. The mixture can be adjusted and combined with a palette.
To build a family, select references sharing specific characteristics: line weight, detail, texture and proportions. Collecting individually appealing images is insufficient. If one reference has complex shadows and another uses flat shapes, decide which should dominate. Test the style on different concepts before saving it as a shared resource. Consistency should hold for a simple illustration and one containing several people or objects; otherwise the collection may appear uniform only when repeating the same composition. Record the intended visual rules alongside the saved style.

Generation, vectorisation and path editing
Recraft can generate vectors and convert raster images into SVG. Its editor works with generated or imported vectors, adjusting shapes, points, curves and colours; SVG and PDF output are documented. Current guidance says the Vector generation type does not accept direct image references, although separate style and conversion workflows exist.
Three operations should be distinguished. Generation proposes new geometry; vectorisation interprets an existing image; editing corrects particular shapes. An authorised original remains preferable to reconstructing a corporate symbol from a screenshot. For a new editorial illustration, generated geometry can provide a starting point. Inspect gaps, joins, overlaps and details at the smallest intended size. The ability to enlarge a vector does not mean its composition works equally well as a thumbnail and as a poster.

Instruction-based editing and local corrections
Studio integrates external models for natural-language image editing. Traditional local editing selects a region to regenerate. Its guide places that workflow in the old interface and warns that large images may be reduced before editing. Compatibility must be checked for the particular operation and model.
An effective instruction identifies what changes and what remains: replacing a background while keeping a silhouette, removing an object or adjusting one colour region. Preserve an earlier version and compare edges, proportions and lettering afterward. Chained regenerations can accumulate differences elsewhere in the image. For precise geometric corrections, the vector editor may be more direct than repeatedly describing the change. For photographic scenes, generative editing can address changes that would otherwise require more extensive manual compositing. Select the correction method according to the asset.

Mockups and design presentation
Mockups apply designs to representations of products, clothing, devices or advertising surfaces. They can start from a collection, a new generation or an image converted into a mockup frame. Their purpose is to visualise how an asset would sit on a surface.
For a campaign presentation, prepare the approved artwork first and its contextual representation second. A poster on a simulated wall helps assess hierarchy and presence, but does not replace a full-size proof. Check whether framing exaggerates scale, perspective hides wording or lighting artificially improves contrast. Deliver the flat artwork as well: production requires the design, not only its promotional representation. Keeping the files separate prevents a mockup from becoming an accidental print master. Label the intended support and dimensions when handing the artwork to another team.

Design Agent and Design Kits
Design Agent proposes creative directions and develops an asset collection that can be saved as a reusable Design Kit. Documentation describes an initial focus on digital products such as apps and websites. The kit retains decisions that guide related assets requested in later conversations.
This is useful while defining an identity. Within an organisation with an established brand, the brief should begin with approved assets and rules. State which elements are fixed and where exploration is allowed. Evaluate a small asset, a cover and a text-heavy composition before adopting a direction. A family can look convincing when presented together but fail when used separately. Approval should identify selected assets and manual modifications that future extensions must preserve. Saving a kit is therefore a production convenience, while accepting the identity remains a design decision.

Video and continuity with still assets
Video generation uses external models and accepts text or starting images; some models support start and end frames. The reviewed guide associates access with Pro and Teams, on desktop and Android, with iOS still rolling out. Available controls depend on the selected model.
One possible use is animating a campaign opening while preserving its visual direction. Approve the reference image first, then define movement, duration and the endpoint. Review every transition: a clear illustration can become ambiguous if an object’s shape changes during the clip. For a sequential explanation, distribute information across shots that can be checked. Visual continuity between still assets and video helps identify the campaign, but editing must also preserve continuity of meaning. A recognisable style does not compensate for an unclear action.

Enlargement, printing and file checks
Recraft distinguishes resolution enlargement from Enhance, which regenerates details. Its enlargement guide warns that transparent inputs can receive a white background. Print options include CMYK TIFF and resolution settings up to 300 DPI. Check these properties in the exported file.
A DPI value does not itself create useful detail: it relates pixel dimensions to physical print size. Confirm final dimensions and request a proof when colour or readability is decisive. CMYK conversion also does not ensure every printer will reproduce the screen exactly. For a library, retain the vector where available, an export suited to its delivery medium and a reference preview. This allows adaptation without enlarging an already reduced copy or reconstructing colour decisions. The production file should be evaluated at the intended viewing distance and size.

Integrations and API automation
The Figma plugin generates assets and brings editable vectors into a design file. It connects to a Recraft account and uses its credits. The API offers generation and editing operations; results can arrive through temporary links, so an integration must retain files needed for longer-term use.
For an asset catalogue, assign each result an identifier, concept and version. Retain its model, style and approval status as well. Automation can prepare variants but should allow an incorrect asset to be stopped without reprocessing the entire collection. In Figma, inspect imported groups and paths; on a website, check file size and alternative descriptions. Integration is useful when it reduces transfer steps without obscuring which file was approved or where the original is retained. Successful delivery and editorial acceptance should remain separately visible.

Plans, rights and data use
The offering distinguishes free access, Basic, Pro and Teams. Terms effective from 21 October 2026 prohibit commercial use of assets created on Free. Documentation grants commercial rights to assets generated under a paid subscription and says they remain private after it ends. A free image should not be transferred into a professional campaign on the assumption that identical conditions apply.
The data guide describes training as enabled by default for individual accounts, disabled by default for Teams, and absent for API inputs and outputs. Its FAQ places voluntary opt-out on Pro; the general wording is broader, so verify the control available in the actual account. Public visibility and training use are different decisions. Before supplying internal references, check both and record the arrangement under which approved assets were created.

Practical applications in OSH
Its potential occupational safety and health application is producing graphics for guides, campaigns and presentations. Vector elements may be useful when an illustration must appear at different sizes, provided the message remains clear and the visual decisions receive human review. This is a communication use, not a validation of the underlying safety content.
It can illustrate guide categories, represent conceptual steps or create graphics used at different sizes. Within an internal library, the same drawing can identify a section on screen and in print, with a label explaining its meaning.
Do not confuse editorial illustration with a safety sign subject to specific requirements. Such signs require the appropriate approved elements, without redrawing them for aesthetic preference or altering proportions to make them more original. A graphic’s appeal does not establish that it communicates the intended instruction.
Worked example and result checks
Example: design a family of illustrations for a safety induction guide covering incident reporting, training and worker participation. The team maintains a shared style, adds accessible labels and checks that each drawing communicates its intended meaning to the audience.
- Choose three different concepts and write what each should communicate. Avoid different drawings meaning the same thing without explanation.
- Define a common style and generate proposals. Inspect silhouettes and details at the smallest intended size.
- Adjust paths, colours and spacing to keep the family’s visual weight consistent. Do not rely only on colour to distinguish categories.
- Add clear labels and check how someone interprets each drawing. Correct ambiguous concepts.
- Export the assets and test them in the destination application. Retain editable vectors and a reference version for future updates.
This is a proposed resource-design exercise. Understanding needs checking; a visually uniform family does not establish that it is understood.
Limitations and conditions of use
Visual consistency does not make an icon a standardised safety sign. Do not replace prescribed safety symbols with generated icons. Review contrast, cultural meaning and readability without colour, then check that exported files preserve strokes, text and proportions in the final medium.
An SVG may contain difficult-to-edit shapes or unnecessary detail. Check structure and file size as well as appearance. Converting an image to vectors does not automatically reconstruct missing information or make it suitable for every scale.
Review reference rights and account conditions. A generated drawing resembling a familiar symbol does not establish permission to use it as a trademark or prescribed sign. For informative images, prepare alternative descriptions appropriate to their context.

When to choose it and how to complement it
Recraft fits requirements for editable vector output. Figma can place the assets in an interface and evaluate their use within a journey. Canva can combine them with content and corporate elements.
Before choosing, test a graphic with curves, text and a colour change. Check which parts remain editable in the application that will maintain the library. Use filenames that distinguish source assets from exported variants and identify who approves future changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is a large PNG equivalent to an SVG?
No. PNG stores pixels; SVG can contain vector shapes. Choose according to editing, scale and intended use.
Can safety pictograms simply be invented?
Signs with specific requirements should use approved elements. Editorial illustrations serve a different purpose.
Why add a label to an icon?
A shape can have different interpretations. Wording helps clarify the action or category represented.
